The 2026 season runs from April 30 to October 2, 2026 — almost five months of open-air programming. The opening on the last Thursday of April traditionally coincides with the start of Berlin's summer; the end in early October marks the last warm evenings of the year. This makes the Freiluftkino one of the longer-running Berlin summer cinemas, covering a large part of the outdoor season.

300 Seats Under the Open Sky

The cinema offers 300 seats — intimate enough for a cozy atmosphere, large enough for a diverse audience. Seating consists of classic folding chairs, some rows with backrests; seat cushions or blankets can be brought along. Reservations are not possible — those who want a good spot should arrive 15–30 minutes before the film starts. On warm summer evenings, the cinema is regularly sold out.

Indie Films as a Program Focus

The program is curated by its sister cinema, Kino Zukunft (also at Neue Zukunft, Alt-Stralau 68), and follows the Berlin indie art-house cinema tradition: current international festival films (often fresh from the Berlinale), arthouse classics, documentaries, small German productions, original languages with subtitles. Mainstream Hollywood plays a subordinate role — those looking for that should go to a multiplex. The Freiluftkino is part of Neue Zukunft, a cultural complex at Alt-Stralau 68 with an indoor cinema, gallery, stage, and pub. This gives the Freiluftkino the infrastructural advantage of a fully-fledged cultural center in the background — restrooms, bar, and an indoor alternative in case of rain are available on-site.
