Autumn town festival on Traben's market square with live music, coffee, cake, and the traditional tree-chopping by the Stadtschröter
The extended weekend around October 3rd is traditionally a final highlight of the season in the Moselle event calendar. In Traben-Trarbach, the Traben district uses the weekend for a market square festival that deliberately differs from the big summer festivals: more compact, quieter, with a focus on conviviality and tradition.
One of the special elements is the tree-chopping by the guild of Stadtschröter. The tree, which was ceremonially erected on the market square on Jakobstag at the end of July, is ritually felled again in autumn – a symbolic act that bridges the gap from midsummer to autumn. As with the erection, the Stadtschröter appear in their historical guild attire, accompanied by music and a large audience.
Over the three festival days, coffee, cake, and snacks are offered – a clearly village-like character that distinguishes the event from the city's major wine festivals. Live music on a manageable stage provides background entertainment. Regional wines are also served by the glass, but the focus is broader and also aimed at families and day visitors.
The Marktplatzfest has been a firm fixture in the Traben-Trarbach event calendar for years. It symbolically marks the transition from the summer season to the quieter autumn and Advent period, during which the town sets another highlight with the underground Mosel Wine Christmas Market, which is known beyond the region.
The Marktplatzfest 2026 is conceived as a relaxed conclusion to the summer festival season. Unlike the major wine festivals of the Moselle, it offers a quieter, almost family-like character with a strong element of tradition through the Stadtschröter.
On all three days, the focus is on coffee and cake, regional snacks, and live music on a modest market square stage. The tree-chopping by the Stadtschröter usually takes place on one of the three days in a festive, ceremonial act.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in late summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
The Stadtschröter appear in their guild attire and perform the felling of the guild tree in a ritualized act with music and audience participation.
Traben-Trarbach is accessible via the B 53, B 50, and the Moseltalbahn railway. The Marktplatzfest is located in the Traben district, a few minutes' walk from the train station.
