Scout summer festival with self-grilled wild boar in the Hüttersdorf district of Schmelz
The Wildsaufest of the "Albert Schweitzer" Hüttersdorf Scout troop is one of the most original club festivals in the Saarland. It takes place at the "Lambarene" troop home in Hellenfloß near Hüttersdorf – a scout camp in the "Katzloch" forest area. The troop has been active in Hüttersdorf for decades and finances a large part of its youth work with the festival.
The culinary highlight is the beechwood grill built by the troop itself, on which two wild boars are grilled on Saturday evening at 7 PM and two more on Sunday lunchtime. The wild boar is the festival's trademark – fresh, regional, and in an atmosphere that cannot be compared to restaurants. Side dishes, salads, and Saarländisch bread are also served.
Throughout the festival, there are affordable cocktails and colorful fruit juice mixes for the younger ones. On Saturday between 6 PM and 8 PM, the Guinness Happy Hour is on. In the afternoons, the coffee and cake counter is open, run by parents and friends of the troop.
A special feature is the tombola, whose main prize is traditionally a hot air balloon ride, donated by the Kreissparkasse Saarlouis. In addition, there is a classic Saarländisch nail-driving competition (two people hammer a nail into a tree stump – whoever sinks it faster wins) and a slideshow about the scouts' youth work.
Hüttersdorf is a district of the municipality of Schmelz in the Saarlouis district, on the transition to the Hochwald. The rural location – between forests, meadows, and orchards – makes the Lambarene troop home the perfect place for an authentic Saarländisch summer festival. Visitors to the Wildsaufest can complement their Saarländisch day with a hike in the Hochwald or a visit to the nearby Litermont legend trail.
The concept of the Wildsaufest has remained the same for decades: four grilled wild boars over two days, cocktail bar, café, tombola, and nail-driving competition. Free admission, proceeds for the scouts' youth work.
