Early summer village festival at the old industrial basin in the Schmelz district
Michelbach, a district of the municipality of Schmelz in the Saarlouis district, is home to an architectural peculiarity: the old basin — a historic industrial basin that once served to supply water to the local ironworks. With the closure of the Saarland's heavy industry, the basin lost its original function but gained a new one: today it is the village of Michelbach's festival site and place of identity.
The organizer is the Dorfgemeinschaft Michelbach e.V. (Michelbach Village Community Association), an organization that has been organizing the Bassinfest on a voluntary basis for years. At the beginning of June — when spring finally transitions into summer — the basin area transforms into a meeting point: catering tents around the basin, campfires at dusk, live music by regional bands, and games for children.
The catering follows Saarland's festival tradition: Schwenker (grilled meat skewers) from the open fire, Lyoner sausage, Bratwurst, draft beer, and cool Schorlen (mixed fruit juice and sparkling water) in the summer. Associations from Michelbach and neighboring villages participate in the catering, with proceeds going to the village community and the maintenance of the basin.
What makes the Bassinfest special is the symbiosis of industrial history and village present. The basin is a reminder of the time when Schmelz and its surroundings were part of the Saarland's industrial landscape — iron and steel shaped the Saarlouis district just like the Saar-Saale and Saarpfalz mining regions. Today, the basin represents a region that does not hide its industrial past but transforms it into new uses.
Visitors to the Bassinfest should explore the Schwarzbachtal valley — hiking trails through old forests, the Saarkohlenwald nature reserve, and the historic Saarbrücken-Trier railway line. The neighboring town of Lebach, with its baroque town center, is also only 10 kilometers away.
The 2026 edition falls on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. The organizer is the Dorfgemeinschaft Michelbach e.V. The meeting point is at the old basin in the Michelbach district.
The exact program will be published by the village community in May 2026.
