Small but mighty

Michelbach, with 839 inhabitants (as of 2024), is the second-smallest district of the municipality of Schmelz in the Saarlouis district. The village lies nestled in a secluded valley between Schmelz-Außen and Nunkirchen – not a tourist destination, but a classic Saarland village with a long history: first documented mention in 1036 as "Michilenbach", later an Imperial village under the Trier Cathedral Chapter and Tholey Abbey.

The Old School as a Village Meeting Point

The Alte Schule Michelbach (Old School Michelbach) has served as a community and club house for decades. Meetings, cultural events, and private celebrations take place here. Once a year – traditionally on a Saturday in early summer – the area around the Old School transforms into the venue for the Flittschenfeschd.

IG Flittschenfeschd — Citizens' Initiative for the Village

Behind the festival is the IG Flittschenfeschd, an interest group of committed Michelbach citizens who have been organizing the festival independently for years. The proceeds typically go towards the maintenance of the Old School and for purchases for the village community.

What is a "Flittsche"?

The festival name plays on Saarland dialect: "Flittsche" in the regional language means something like "splinter", "shred", or "small piece" – a humorous understatement for what happens on a festival evening between beer, Schwenkbraten (grilled pork neck), and live music. Other interpretations see the term as a reference to an old nickname for the people of Michelbach.

Pure Saarland Festival Tradition

Classic Saarland festival dishes are expected: Schwenkbraten from a wood grill, Lyoner sausage, fries, meatballs, accompanied by beer and wine. Regional cover bands or DJs often provide the musical accompaniment. A family afternoon with coffee and homemade cake rounds off the festival. Anyone who wants to experience rural Saarland off the beaten tourist paths will find it at the Flittschenfeschd.
