Anniversary concert of the Braunschweiger Shantychor on its 40th anniversary at the Lessingtheater Wolfenbüttel
The Braunschweiger Shantychor was founded in 1986 and has since become an integral part of the North German shanty scene. Despite Braunschweig's location far from the coast, the choir passionately cultivates maritime songs, keeping alive a cultural tradition inextricably linked to the history of German seafaring.
Shanties are work songs that originated on the sailing ships of the 18th and 19th centuries. They served to rhythmize heavy physical labor – setting sails, heaving anchors, operating pumps – in the rhythm of a leader-chorus response. Their powerful melodies and catchy lyrics make shanties a popular genre to this day. In addition, the choir also cultivates sea shanties that sing of the romantic, melancholic, and humorous aspects of a sailor's life.
The anniversary concert on May 8, 2026, at the Lessingtheater Wolfenbüttel is a festive highlight of the choir's forty-year history. The program features a representative selection from the extensive repertoire, supplemented by special pieces and possibly guest contributions from other choirs. With its stage and auditorium, the Lessingtheater provides the ideal setting for this celebratory occasion.
The anniversary evening is intended as a thank you to the loyal audience and a tribute to the many active singers who have shaped the choir over the past four decades. The exact program for 2026 will be published by the choir in the spring.
