50th Torch Swim at Salzgittersee

A Season Opening with Tradition

What began in 1977 as an idea by the Sepia diving section of TG Jugenddorf has developed over five decades into a firm fixture in Salzgitter's spring calendar. The Torch Swim traditionally marks the opening of the bathing season at Salzgittersee and attracts thousands of visitors to the Reppnersche Bucht every year. In 2026, the 50th edition will celebrate a very special anniversary.

Poseidon Awakens

The spectacle follows a set ritual: As dusk falls, around 50 members of the diving section enter the still cool water of the lake, each equipped with a burning torch. In a choreographed procession of light, they move through the Reppnersche Bucht – a sight that bathes the water in flaming orange and evokes the mystical connection between humans and the elements. Symbolically, this awakens the sea god Poseidon, who is meant to watch over the upcoming bathing season.

Fireworks around 9 PM

The highlight is a large fireworks display around 9:00 PM, which bathes the night sky over Salzgittersee in colorful cascades of light. The reflections on the water's surface double the visual effect, making the fireworks a photogenic natural spectacle.

Family Program in Advance

From the afternoon of Easter Sunday, the Easter Bunny invites you to a family program. For the younger visitors, there are Easter egg hunts, hands-on activities, and sweet surprises. The official opening with welcome speeches, live music, and catering begins at 6:00 PM.

The Torch Swim is jointly organized by the Sepia diving section of Turn- und Sportgemeinschaft Jugenddorf and BSF Salzgitter GmbH, which operates the indoor swimming pool and the associated outdoor bathing areas.
