60 potters and ceramicists in the Market Square — concurrently Thuringian Delicacy and Speciality Market at Theaterplatz
Weimar in the state of Thuringia is one of Germany's most important cultural cities — home to Goethe, Schiller, Herder, Wieland, and the Bauhaus, with twelve UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Market Square, with the Town Hall, Hotel Elephant, and Cranach House, has been the social centre for centuries. It hosts the city's most important markets and festivals — from the Onion Market in October to the Pottery Market in September.
The Weimar Pottery Market is one of the most important pottery markets in Central Germany. Around 60 potters and ceramicists from all over Germany gather on the first weekend of September. The spectrum is broad: Faience (tin-glazed earthenware), Bürgel Ceramics (the famous Thuringian manufactory tradition from Bürgel), Stoneware from Wood-Fired Kilns, Raku Pottery (Japanese tradition), and Porcelain.
The opening on Saturday at 10 AM is traditionally accompanied by the Thuringian Potters' Guild. Awards for long-standing members and apprenticeships for young potters are presented, and a craft choir provides musical accompaniment. On Sunday from 11 AM to 5 PM, there is Sunday shopping in Weimar's city centre.
Parallel to the Pottery Market, the Thuringian Delicacy and Speciality Market runs on the nearby Theaterplatz both days from 9 AM to 5 PM — featuring regional specialities, woodwork, textiles, soaps, and arts and crafts. The two markets complement each other ideally: pottery for ceramics, delicacy market for culinary delights.
Two market days in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Weimar. Market Square and Theaterplatz together become the densest craft and delicacy fair in Central Thuringia.
