Celebration for the 277th birthday of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe with free admission to the Classic Houses
The Goethe birthday has been publicly celebrated in Weimar since the 18th century. Even during Goethe's lifetime, from around 1781 onwards, acquaintances and admirers celebrated August 28 in Weimar with joint events — Goethe lived here from 1775 until his death in 1832, for over 57 years, and was the undisputed center of Weimar's intellectual life. His 100th birthday in 1849 and his 100th death anniversary in 1932 were marked by major celebrations throughout Germany — with music, readings, and speeches. The annual birthday celebration in Weimar has preserved this tradition over the centuries and is today supported by the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, Thuringia's largest cultural institution.
The centerpiece of the celebration is free admission to the houses of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar — a gesture intended to make Goethe's heritage accessible to all. The houses include: Goethe House on Frauenplan (the house where Goethe lived from 1782 until his death in 1832 — with original furnishings, library, study); Goethe's Garden House in the Park an der Ilm (Goethe's first Weimar house, idyllically located in the park); Schiller House (the home of his friend Friedrich Schiller); Anna Amalia Library (UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the famous Rococo Hall); Wittumspalais (residence of Duchess Anna Amalia). In total, over a dozen houses can be visited — a unique day trip through Weimar's entire heritage.
Events take place throughout the day: Readings from Goethe's works (Faust, West-Eastern Divan, Italian Journey, Elective Affinities) by actors and actresses in the historic rooms. Concerts featuring music from Goethe's time — Mozart, Beethoven, Carl Maria von Weber, often on original instruments. Discussions and conversations with Goethe scholars on current research questions — for example, on Goethe's relevance today, his influence on world literature, his scientific work. The Goethe National Museum on Frauenplan, one of the main sites of the Klassik Stiftung, hosts the major events.
The 2026 Goethe Birthday falls during the Weimar Wine Festival, which takes place on the market square and in the city center with wine tastings, regional culinary delights, and live music. The combination is clever: Goethe as a wine lover, Weimar as a wine city — the Klassik Stiftung invites you to culture, the city invites you to enjoyment. Those who spend the whole day in Weimar can visit Goethe House in the morning, taste wine at Frauenplan at noon, experience a reading at Schiller House in the afternoon, and dance in the market square in the evening.
Weimar is located in the Weimarer Land district in the state of Thuringia — manageable with around 65,000 inhabitants, but immense in terms of culture. The city boasts six UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Goethe House, Schiller House, Park an der Ilm, Anna Amalia Library, Belvedere/Tiefurt/Ettersburg Palaces, and the Bauhaus heritage. Visitors to the Goethe Birthday in Weimar can explore between three and four World Heritage houses in a single day — a concentration rarely found elsewhere in the world.
On August 28, 2026, Weimar celebrates its most famous citizen. The Klassik Stiftung Weimar opens all its houses with free admission — a unique day on which Goethe's entire heritage is accessible to everyone. Readings from Goethe's works, concerts with music from his time, and discussions about his relevance shape the day.
