Three days of medieval times with a knight tournament, camp life, and crafts at Zoo Osnabrück
With its forest-adjacent enclosures and underground themed worlds, Zoo Osnabrück is one of Germany's most distinguished zoos. From October 9th to 11th, 2026, it will also become the stage for a Medieval Spectaculum: camp life, a knight tournament, and historical crafts will merge with the zoo tour into an unusual journey of experience.
Reenactment groups will set up their camps on designated areas within the zoo grounds. Blacksmiths will work at the fire, bow makers will shape ash wood, and basket weavers and felt makers will demonstrate their techniques. The historical atmosphere is carried by meticulously researched costumes, authentic tents, and genuine tools.
Several times a day, a knight tournament will take place in the center of the festival grounds. Skilled riders will demonstrate jousting, lance duels, and foot combat. The choreographies are family-friendly and designed without startling effects.
Jesters will entertain the grounds with acrobatics, juggling, and short plays. Falconers will present birds of prey in flight – a special connection to the zoo's zoological mission. Market music with hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, and drums will accompany the hours between performances.
The Spectaculum is part of the Lower Saxony Zoo Days, a statewide event series by zoos and animal parks to raise awareness for species conservation. Thus, the medieval festival is linked to the zoo's educational mission: visitors will not only see knights but also learn about the approximately 2,500 animals in the park.
Admission to the Medieval Spectaculum is included in the regular zoo admission. This makes the format particularly attractive for families who are planning a zoo visit anyway – three levels of experience for the price of one. The enclosures remain fully accessible, with the medieval theme interspersed between the monkey temple, tiger forest, and underworld.
The 2026 edition focuses on the proven combination of camp life, show combat, and falconry – interspersed with the regular zoo operations.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in early autumn. The structure will follow the proven key points of previous years:
