One of the Oldest Equestrian Traditions on the Middle Rhine

The Heddesdorfer Pfingstreiter are among the centuries-old equestrian processions celebrated in some places in the Rhineland and the Eifel region on Whit Tuesday. In Neuwied-Heimbach and the neighbouring Heddesdorf, the tradition has deep roots. The riders process in a festive parade through the districts, reaching their destination at the historic Rommersdorf Abbey, where the procession culminates in a solemn ceremony.

Horses, Riders, Tradition

The procession unites horses and riders from surrounding clubs and riding stables. In many cases, the riders wear historical or festive attire. The joint parade is an expression of community spirit and an equestrian culture deeply rooted in the region. The procession traditionally leads to Rommersdorf Abbey, where a devotion spiritually anchors the occasion.

Whit Tuesday as a Festival Day

Whit Tuesday – as a day within the Whitsun octave – is used for equestrian processions in many Rhineland communities. In Heddesdorf, the tradition is a fixed part of the annual calendar. It is observed by residents and their guests from the region and is an example of the kind of traditional customs that stand between faith and folk festival (Volksfest) in the Rhineland.

Connection to Rommersdorf Abbey

The former Premonstratensian Abbey Rommersdorf is the destination of the procession. With its more than 900-year history, it provides a historically and atmospherically fitting setting for the custom. Other events, such as the Advent market organised by the citizens' association Pro Heimbach-Weis, also make use of this impressive backdrop.

Heddesdorfer Pfingstreiter — edition 2026

On Whit Tuesday, May 26, 2026, the traditional procession of the Heddesdorfer Pfingstreiter will take place again. Starting around 12 PM, the riders will set off and ride through the districts of Heddesdorf and Heimbach-Weis to Rommersdorf Abbey. This centuries-old tradition combines equestrian culture, customs, and a religious occasion, making it one of the most impressive dates in Neuwied's Pentecost calendar. Spectators are warmly welcome to follow the procession along its route.

The 2026 edition continues the long-standing tradition. The riders gather in Heddesdorf and follow the established route through Heimbach towards Rommersdorf Abbey. A devotion will be held there in the sacred setting of the former Premonstratensian Abbey.

The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organiser in the spring. The structure will follow the proven cornerstones of previous years: gathering of riders in the morning, procession through the districts from approx. 12 PM, arrival at Rommersdorf Abbey with devotion.
