Traditional Coburg Kirwa in Autumn in the Itzgrund
The municipality of Lautertal, with its districts Oberlauter, Unterlauter, and Tiefenlauter, is located north of Coburg in the Itzgrund region. In the state of Bavaria, in the district of Coburg, the Kirchweih has developed into an annual major event for the municipality's nearly 3,500 inhabitants. The focus is on Oberlauter, where TSV Oberlauter traditionally invites guests to the festival tent — usually in the third week of October.
As is customary at Franconian Kirchweihen, the festival centers around the Kirwa couples in traditional costume, the Kirwabaum (Kirwa tree), and the large festival tent. The four festival days feature alternating dance evenings with brass band music (e.g., Upper Franconian bands and dance bands), a festive church service on Sunday, a traditional morning pint (Frühschoppen), a children's Kirwa, and a festive parade. The atmosphere is typically Coburg: down-to-earth, familial, with Franconian specialties such as Coburger Bratwurst, dumplings, Coburger beer, and Hutzelbrot (dried fruit bread).
Lautertal was formed in 1972 from the merger of the districts Ober-, Unter-, and Tiefenlauter. The area is predominantly agricultural, with a strong tradition of club life. The Kirwa Oberlauter, alongside the Florianifest (St. Florian's Day festival) of the fire department and the Schützenfest (marksmen's festival), is one of the fixed dates in the Coburg club calendar.
Like many small Kirwa communities in Upper Franconia, Lautertal is proud that relatives and former residents meet again in their hometown for the Kirwa. The festival tent serves as a meeting point for generations — from youth to seniors — and strengthens village life in the structurally weak Coburg Itzgrund region.
The 2026 Kirchweih in Lautertal follows decades of tradition: four to five festival days in the third week of October in the Oberlauter festival tent. TSV Oberlauter is the main organizer responsible for setup, the festival host, and the program, with the municipality of Lautertal providing organizational support.
The program includes dance evenings with Upper Franconian brass band music, a festive church service on Sunday morning followed by a morning pint (Frühschoppen), a parade of clubs, Kirwa couples in Coburg traditional costume, and a children's Kirwa. Detailed program items and exact dates will be published from summer 2026.
