Open-air festival mass, procession, and parish festival in Upper Franconia
Corpus Christi – in Church Latin, “Sollemnitas Sanctissimi Corporis et Sanguinis Christi” – is one of the most important solemnities of the Catholic Church. It celebrates the reality of the Eucharist, the bodily presence of Christ in bread and wine. In Bavaria and large parts of southern Germany, Corpus Christi is a public holiday; the typical form of celebration is the Corpus Christi procession, during which the Blessed Sacrament – a consecrated host in a monstrance – is carried through the streets and gardens.
Rödental is located in the district of Coburg, a predominantly Evangelical-Lutheran region (the Coburg area only became part of Bavaria in 1920 and remained strongly rooted in its Protestant tradition). The Catholic parish of St. Hedwig is a comparatively young community, founded in the 20th century for Catholic immigrants. Since September 2019, it has belonged to the pastoral area “Coburg City and Country”.
Instead of a long city procession – as is common in many large Bavarian cities – St. Hedwig opts for an intimate form: The festival mass at 10:45 AM takes place outdoors on the meadow behind the church, accompanied musically by the parish’s youth choir. Afterwards, a small procession moves around the church and over the cemetery. The solemn conclusion takes place inside the church.
After the main religious part, the parish festival for young and old follows – a classic Catholic summer festival with music, grilled food, drinks, and a colorful program for children (bouncy castle, skill games, crafts). The festival usually ends in the late afternoon.
Even though Corpus Christi is not a public holiday in a predominantly Protestant district (Coburg is one of the few Bavarian districts where Corpus Christi is not a day off), Catholic communities make full use of the day. The celebration in Rödental shows how a small community combines its tradition with dignity and joie de vivre – without the grand effort of a city procession, but with a genuine atmosphere.
Rödental has around 13,000 inhabitants and is known for the Goebel porcelain manufactory and the Rosenau Castle complex. Those who wish to combine the parish festival with a day trip will find a worthwhile destination in the vicinity of Coburg (15 km away) with Veste Coburg, Ehrenburg Palace, and the historic old town.
