Heidschnucke — Symbol of the Lüneburg Heath

The Grey-Horned Heath Sheep (Graue Gehörnte Heidschnucke) is THE symbol of the Lüneburg Heath. Without their grazing, the heath would become overgrown and disappear — the sheep are indispensable landscape managers of the unique heath ecosystems. The breeding and conservation of the Heidschnucke is therefore of the greatest ecological and cultural importance. The annual Heidschnuckentag in Müden (Örtze) is the most important date for this breeding community.

Tradition with 76 Editions

With the 76th edition, the Heidschnuckentag looks back on decades of history — it was established in the post-war era and has since become a firm fixture in the calendar of Heidschnucke breeders, shepherds, and heath enthusiasts. Müden, as a state-recognized health resort in the Südheide, has always been the venue for this central breeding show.

Presentation, Award Ceremony, Auction

The professional heart of the day consists of three parts: presentation of the young breeding rams from the various sheep farms in the Lüneburg Heath; award ceremony according to breeding criteria by a jury; and auction of the awarded rams to interested shepherds. This auction is more than just a trade: it ensures the genetic diversity and quality of Heidschnucke breeding in the entire region.

In addition to the professional program, folklore performances, shepherds in heathland costumes, traditional music, and heath specialties at catering stands ensure the unique atmosphere of the day.
