Free open-air music festival to mark the start of summer — 20th edition on June 21, 2026
The Fête de la Musique originates from a French initiative: in 1982, then-Minister of Culture Jack Lang invented the concept of turning city streets into freely accessible music stages on the day of the astronomical start of summer. Today, the Fête is celebrated in over 1,300 cities worldwide; Weimar has been part of it since 2007. The 20th edition in 2026, coinciding with the anniversary, falls on June 21 — the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, the shortest night. The idea remains unchanged: music for everyone, freely accessible, without star-studded stage productions, with professional musicians playing shoulder-to-shoulder with passionate amateurs.
The entire historic Old Town of Weimar becomes a stage. Several small stage setups are located on the Market Square in front of the Town Hall; in Schillerstraße, cafés accompany their outdoor seating with live music; a string quartet performs in Frauenplan in front of Goethe's former residence; jazz trios play in the courtyards around Krämerbrücke; a brass band performs on Theaterplatz. In total, between 60 and 100 acts fill the city — from a cappella vocal groups to Klezmer ensembles, jazz combos, rock cover bands, singer-songwriters, to folk and world music formations. The spectrum is intentionally broad, and the atmosphere is summery, given the summer weather and the historic backdrop.
The traditional heartpiece of the festival is the quarter around the Crêperie near the Market Square — a direct homage to its French origins. Here, several groups perform simultaneously in a small area, the sounds overlap, and you wander from one soundscape to another. Those coming with children will find music at child-friendly volumes from the late afternoon onwards; those who stay longer will experience a shift to louder genres as darkness falls.
The Fête de la Musique falls within a culturally rich period for the city. The Kunstfest Weimar follows in early July, the Yiddish Summer in August, and in between, the Summer Academy of the Anna Amalia Library. The Fête is the popular, low-threshold opening evening of this cultural summer — Weimar, in the state of Thuringia, shows itself from its most open side. If you want to combine the day: in the morning, visit the Park an der Ilm and Goethe House, in the afternoon the Bauhaus Museum, and in the evening, the Fête de la Musique — one of the most beautiful ways to experience Weimar in a single day.
On June 21, 2026, Weimar opens its historic Old Town for the Fête de la Musique for the 20th time — the freely accessible open-air music festival to mark the astronomical start of summer. The entire Old Town becomes a stage, with professional musicians playing alongside passionate amateurs in the Market Square, Frauenplan, Schillerstraße, Theaterplatz, and the Crêperie quarter.
The spectrum is intentionally broad: Early music, jazz, rock ballads, chansons, Klezmer, classical music, pop, singer-songwriters, world music. As darkness falls, the city becomes increasingly crowded, and the soundscape intensifies. The highlight is the late evening until midnight.
The complete stage program will be published shortly before June 21, 2026, on stadt.weimar.de.
