Four days of Mosel wines in the historic Frauenplan — July 9 to 12, 2026
When the Mosel vintners come to Weimar in July, two special German identities meet: the classical city of Weimar with its Goethe and Schiller tradition, and the German Mosel wine region with its steep slate slopes and world-class Riesling. The venue is the historic Frauenplan, directly in front of Goethe's former residence — one of the most atmospheric locations in the city for a wine festival.
The Weimar Mosel Wine Festival 2026 runs from July 9 to 12. Vintners and wineries from the Mosel region — from the Upper Moselle Valley through the Middle Moselle to the Lower Moselle — present their assortments: Rieslings in all flavor profiles (from dry to noble sweet), Pinot Noir, Müller-Thurgau, Elbling as a regional grape variety, sparkling wines, and brandies. Tastings are available directly at the stand, with small bread and cheese accompaniments.
Complementing the wine offerings, regional gastronomy stands provide culinary pairings: Thuringian Bratwurst, game sausage, regional cheeses, bread from a regional baker, and sweet delicacies. The mix of Mosel wine and Thuringian cuisine creates an unusual taste experience — and celebrates the diversity of German wine regions with German regional cuisine.
Unlike Frankfurt or Würzburg, Weimar is not known as a wine city — which makes the Mosel Wine Festival all the more special. The city in the district of Weimar (independent city) uses the summer months for several culinary festivals: In addition to the Mosel Wine Festival, there is the Goethe's Wine Festival (August 27-30, 2026), which is linked to Weimar's cultural calendar. Both festivals benefit from the high tourist density and the culturally sophisticated audience.
The Frauenplan is one of Weimar's most beautiful squares: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe lived here from 1782 until his death in 1832 — today it houses the Goethe National Museum. The stalls and stands of the Mosel Wine Festival are located directly opposite Goethe's house. Those needing a break from wine tasting can visit the museum exhibition directly — a special combination of literature, history, and wine.
From July 9 to 12, 2026, the Frauenplan transforms into a wine meeting point. Vintners from the Mosel region present their Rieslings, Pinot Noir, and Elbling — with tasting opportunities directly at the stalls. Regional gastronomy stands complement the offerings.
