Probably Germany's longest Christmas market — nine illuminated mills in the nature valley, 20th anniversary edition 2026
The Weihnachtstal is not a classic Christmas market. Instead of a marketplace with stalls, a stage, and mulled wine stands, an entire natural valley serves as the venue: the Mühltal, a narrow valley gorge between Eisenberg and the district of Weißenborn in the Saale-Holzland district. Nine historic water mills — some dating back to the 17th century — line the stream along the Mühltal hiking trail. On two December weekends, all mills are illuminated, decorated, and host events. You hike through the valley from mill to mill, through illuminated forest, past the stream that steams and fogs in frosty weather. This combination of nature and Christmas is unique in Germany.
Each of the nine mills has its own concept. One offers handicrafts (potters, woodcarvers, glassblowers), the next mulled wine and punch, the third homemade cakes and coffee, the fourth is a venue for storytellers, the fifth for live music (classical, folk, a cappella). One mill is designed as a Christmas church with services and choir singing, another as a 'Children's Mill' with a children's program. The hiking trail between the mills is lit with torches — it's hard to find anything more romantic in the German Advent season.
Those who don't want or can't walk can take the Weihnachtstal-Express — a small tourist train with wagons where musicians play and entertain between the mills. The shuttle (JES Verkehrsgesellschaft) brings visitors free of charge from five designated parking lots into the valley — important because the Mühltal itself has no parking. With the entrance wristband, you can use the shuttle back and forth. Dogs are allowed, which is unusual for a Christmas market; children can carry torches/lanterns, which enhances the atmosphere.
2026 marks the 20th anniversary of the Weihnachtstal. Special surprises are planned — the organizer has kept them secret until shortly before the event, but hints at additional mill illumination, special programs, and an expanded concert program. The characteristic avoidance of loud staging will be maintained — the Weihnachtstal sees itself as an anti-Christmas market: quiet, connected to nature, contemplative.
Eisenberg is a small town in the Saale-Holzland district in Thuringia, located between Jena and Gera. With Eisenberg Castle (Baroque) and a small old town, it is worth seeing itself; the Mühltal begins immediately west of the town. Visitors to the Weihnachtstal should also stop by the Eisenberg town center.
