500-year-old folk and wine festival in Mülheim an der Mosel with Grafschafter wine tasting, parade, and Zeppelin wine raffle
The Mülheimer Markt is one of the most deeply rooted historical events on the Middle Moselle. Its origins date back more than five hundred years to the time of the Counts of Veldenz, who held their market and court days here. Over the centuries, this originally administrative and economic occasion has developed into a rich folk and wine festival that keeps the historical significance of the place alive to this day.
From Tuesday, August 4th, to Thursday, August 6th, 2026, the festival runs in its traditional mid-week arrangement. The choice of weekdays is historically determined – the market day originally fell on a mid-week day – and clearly distinguishes the Mülheimer Markt from most other Moselle events held on weekends.
The qualitative start is the Grafschafter wine tasting on Tuesday evening. Winemakers from Mülheim and the former County of Veldenz present their wines in an organised comparative tasting. The tasting is a rare opportunity to experience several winemakers from the region in a structured setting with explanations.
The most traditional element is the colourful parade on Wednesday. Associations, brass bands, floats, traditional costume groups, and carnival clubs march through the town. The parade is a showcase of local identity and one of the highlights for locals and visitors.
One of the most unusual elements of the Mülheimer Markt is the Zeppelin wine raffle on Thursday afternoon. In this traditional act, wine bottles are attached to model Zeppelins or balloons, released into the air, and raffled off after landing – a playful, almost surreal staging that gives the festival a unique touch.
In parallel to the main programme, a funfair with carousels, roller coaster elements, dodgems, and stalls, as well as a craft market with regional exhibitors, are set up. The folk festival element thus remains present throughout all three days.
The 2026 edition continues the centuries-old format. Unlike most Moselle festivals, the Mülheimer Markt takes place during the week – a historical legacy of the market and court days of the Counts of Veldenz.
The wine and customs element is closely intertwined with the folk festival element: the Grafschafter wine tasting, the parade, and the Zeppelin wine raffle give the event its special identity.
The exact programme for 2026 will be published by the organiser in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Open on all three days. Classic folk festival attractions, food stalls, craft exhibitors with regional products.
Mülheim an der Mosel is located on the B 53 federal road. Train connections are available via Wittlich or Trier with a bus connection to the town.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Wine, food, drinks, and amusement rides are paid for on site.
Unlike most Moselle festivals, the Mülheimer Markt takes place during the week (Tuesday to Thursday). Working visitors should consider this when planning.
