A Market with Roots in Club Life

Fürstenhausen is a district of Völklingen – a city primarily known internationally for its UNESCO World Heritage site, Völklinger Hütte. But beyond the industrial monuments, the old Saarland lives on: club life, village community, traditional Advent markets. The Christmas market of the Obst- & Gartenbauverein Fürstenhausen is exactly that.

When Does the Market Take Place?

Traditionally on the first Saturday in Advent, a single day, from 2 PM to 8 PM. In 2025, the market took place on November 29th; for 2026, November 28th is expected to be set as the date. More precise information will follow shortly before the Advent season via the website of the horticultural associations.

What Makes the Market Special

Unlike the large city center markets, Fürstenhausen is small, manageable, and local. This is precisely what makes its charm:

• Club Grounds as a Venue: Instead of an asphalt market square, the authentic club area with huts, trees, and traditional lighting
• Local Crafts: Jewelry, Advent arrangements, candles, felt crafts from local residents
• School Stalls: The nearby community school participates with homemade cookies and crafts

The Fruit and Horticultural Association

Fruit and horticultural associations have a long tradition in the Saarland – they emerged in the 19th century to improve yields in the small Saarland farms and have survived as social clubs to this day. The association in Fürstenhausen is part of the Saarbrücken regional association and is involved in maintaining traditional customs in addition to horticulture – including the Christmas market.

Anyone living in or visiting Völklingen or the Saar Valley should know Fürstenhausen. The district has just over 4,000 inhabitants and is located on the western outskirts, between the Saar river and the Warndtwald forest. Its proximity to France (Saargemünd is 25 km away) and its old mining heritage shape its identity.
