Gastronomic experience with fried plaice directly in the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Schollenbraten im Watt is a unique event of its kind in Wangerland. It combines two strengths of the region: the natural scenery of the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site and the culinary tradition of coastal cuisine. Plaice – a flatfish native to the North Sea – has been a staple of Frisian cuisine for generations, best enjoyed freshly fried in butter and served with potatoes, bacon dressing, and salad.
During the low tide phase, tables, benches, and mobile frying stations are set up in the mudflats. Guests walk with mudflat guides to the event location, take their seats, and enjoy their plaice right where the fish once swam. The atmosphere is both festive and connected to nature – the salty scent of the North Sea, the vast sky, and the play of light on the tidal creeks create an unmistakable ambiance.
Experienced mudflat guides plan routes, times, and locations in coordination with tide data and nature conservation authorities. Sensitive areas are avoided, and the event strictly follows nature conservation guidelines. Participants are informed about weather conditions, tides, and rules of conduct before the start.
The focus is on freshly fried plaice. Side dishes such as boiled potatoes, bacon dressing, salad, and bread complement the dish. A small selection of drinks – East Frisian beer, white wine, water, and Frisian tea – completes the offering. Vegetarian alternatives are available upon request.
Due to the complexity of the event – weather, tides, logistics – advance registration is essential. Wangerland Touristik will announce the exact date in summer 2026; it usually falls in July or August. Mudflat-appropriate clothing and rubber boots are mandatory; some providers make them available to participants.
This year's edition follows the proven concept. Wangerland Touristik plans the date, meeting point, and tide to ensure the stay in the mudflats is safe and enjoyable.
Those looking for a truly unique gastronomic experience will find it here: a meal that has nothing in common with classic restaurant atmosphere, but offers a lasting memory.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by Wangerland Touristik in the summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
