The Nikolausmarkt Büren is one of the most traditional Christmas markets in the Paderborn region. For three days around St. Nicholas Day (December 6th), the historic market square of this town in South Westphalia transforms into a festive Christmas meadow with wooden huts, cosy atmosphere, and mulled wine.

Three Days of Market with Different Opening Hours

The opening hours are staggered to adapt the format to different work and family schedules:

• Friday, December 4th, 2026: from 5:00 PM — Market opening for professionals after work
• Saturday, December 5th, 2026: from 2:00 PM — Full-throttle market day
• Sunday, December 6th, 2026 (St. Nicholas Day): from 12:00 PM — Family Sunday with Nikolaus procession

Arts and Crafts and Culinary Delights

The stalls offer classic Christmas market assortments: wood carvings, felt crafts, candles, nativity scenes, handmade jewellery, food specialities. Alongside culinary offerings: mulled wine, children's punch, crêpes, bratwurst, potato pancakes, gingerbread, candied almonds, stollen. The Büren brewery and local bakeries are regularly represented.

Nikolaus Procession on Sunday Afternoon

The highlight is the Nikolaus procession on Sunday, December 6th (St. Nicholas Day). St. Nicholas, traditionally accompanied by Knecht Ruprecht, walks through Büren's town centre, stopping at several points to distribute nuts, tangerines, and sweets to the children. A tradition that is a highlight of the pre-Christmas calendar for Büren's children.

Büren is located in the southern Paderborn region. Travel by car via the A33 (exit Wewelsburg or Brilon-Süd) and the B480. By train, it's indirect: to Paderborn Hbf, then bus 460 or 461 to Büren.
