Schlosspark Geislautern — the historic setting
The Schlosspark Geislautern is one of the largest and most beautiful park grounds in the Saarbrücken district. The remains of the former noble castle and extensive landscaped gardens make the park a popular local recreation area today. The fact that the Geislauterner Kirmes sets up its stage 'on the meadow in the Schlosspark' — as the organizers say — gives the event a very special character: instead of asphalt and city noise, here you'll find old trees, wide meadows, and the atmosphere of a historic park.
Sacred start with a festive service
The Kirmes traditionally begins on Saturday with a festive service at 5:30 PM in the Geislautern parish church. Afterwards, a procession, accompanied by the Fanfarencorps Völklingen, winds through the district to the Schlosspark. On the festival meadow, the traditional beer tapping follows — the official starting signal for four days of Kirmes. This combination of parish community, tradition, and folk festival is typically Saarlandic and reflects the region's Catholic heritage.
Club life at its heart
On Sunday — the main Kirmes day — the Geislautern clubs take center stage. Starting at 3 PM, the children's and youth departments of the Turnverein Geislautern present their performances — acrobatics, dance, floor gymnastics. Local music associations and choirs perform on the festival stage. In between, the clubs serve their guests with Schwenker (grilled meat skewers), Bratwurst, fries, Saarland beer, and coffee/cake. It's the classic club festival where the whole neighborhood participates.
Fireworks on Monday
The highlight for many families is the closing fireworks on Monday evening around 10 PM. Above the old trees of the Schlosspark and the remains of the former castle, the fireworks have a very special effect — a historic backdrop, a summer night sky, the shared moment of a district community.
Geislautern and Völklingen
Geislautern is a district of Völklingen in the Saarbrücken district. With just under 3,000 inhabitants, it's a typical Saarland district with its own parish, its own clubs, and its own sense of community. The Schlosspark Halle, Schloss-Kultur Geislautern e.V., and the working group of Geislautern clubs ensure a vibrant cultural program throughout the year — the Kirmes is the biggest joint event.
