Langenachtderkunst Gütersloh — 25 Years of City Culture in One Night

When the sun sets over Gütersloh on Saturday, May 16, 2026, the city centre transforms into a giant open-air museum: The Lange Nacht der Kunst celebrates its 25th edition — making it one of the most traditional cultural events in the Ostwestfalen region of Gütersloh. From 7 PM to midnight, around 40 stations between the distinctive water tower and the IMA on Langen Weg open their doors.

Opening — 200 Dancers on Berliner Platz

The official opening spectacle begins at 6:30 PM on Berliner Platz: Approximately 200 dancers from the DJK and "danceair" groups will present a choreographed opening show. Over 1,000 spectators followed the spectacle — after which visitors disperse throughout the city centre to discover the individual stations.

Around 40 Stations — Diversity from the City Museum to the Industrial Hall

The stations cover the entire spectrum of contemporary and classical art. Some highlights of the anniversary edition:

Gütersloh City Museum — "Überblendungen" (Overlays)

The City Museum presents the exhibition "Überblendungen": historical photographs are combined with current images of the same locations — a journey through Gütersloh's city history from an industrial village to a modern medium-sized city.

Black-and-White Photography

Several stations showcase black-and-white photography with a focus on social documentation and portrait art — a homage to the beginnings of reportage photography.

Surrealist Experiments and Performance

Surrealist performance pieces, experimental installations, and participatory actions take place at various locations — including a "living room" in public space and collaborative art projects with the audience.

Music — from Keyboard to Big Band

The musical offerings range from the traditional "Lange Nacht der Tasten" (Keyboard Night Marathon with various pianists) to Big Band jazz in the illuminated Martin Luther Church — a proven combination of sacred building and swing.

Interactive Map — The Digital Assistant

For the first time in its 25th edition, the city offers an interactive story map with all stations, program items, and route suggestions. Via storymaps.arcgis.com, visitors can plan their route in advance and navigate between stations during the night — a practical tool for 40 distributed locations.

Gütersloh's Cultural Landscape

The organizer is the Culture Department of the City of Gütersloh, with financial and conceptual support from the Gütersloh Citizens' Foundation. As the head of the department explained for the 25th edition: "Gütersloh is a wonderfully art-loving city." A statement supported by the participation of hundreds of volunteer artists, musicians, dancers, and helpers.

Gütersloh — Capital of the Gütersloh District

The city of Gütersloh, with its approximately 102,000 inhabitants, is the administrative seat of the Gütersloh district in Ostwestfalen-Lippe. Known as the headquarters of the Bertelsmann Group (media company) and the Miele headquarters (home appliances), and for its distinct industrial history. The city centre around Berliner Platz, the City Museum, and the Martin Luther Church form the cultural core where the Lange Nacht der Kunst has unfolded annually for a quarter of a century.
