A stage of the unique island marathon across the seven East Frisian Islands
The EWE Nordseelauf is more than a competition – it's an eight-day adventure across the seven inhabited East Frisian Islands: Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog, and Wangerooge. Each race day, runners transfer to a new island by ferry or boat and complete their own stage there. In total, participants cover around 100 kilometers on beaches, dune paths, and island roads. The race was first held in 2003 and has since become a firm fixture in the German running calendar.
Norderney, the second-largest and most populous East Frisian Island, offers the perfect setting for a running festival as a stage finish for the Nordseelauf. The course traditionally leads along the west beach, through the dunes, and over asphalted island paths. A large fan zone with sponsor stands, catering, and massage services awaits athletes in the finish area in the center of the island. Here, island residents, holiday guests, and companions can experience the sporting competition up close.
The Nordseelauf combines top athletic performance with island tourism and regional culture. On Norderney, the Staatsbad Norderney tourism association and local retailers offer an accompanying program: guided island tours, culinary delights, beach concerts, and family programs. The race is a welcome opportunity to experience the unique natural landscape of the East Frisian Islands from the perspective of athletes.
Participation in the Nordseelauf requires advance registration and a minimum level of running endurance. There are various competition classes, including individual race, relay, and seniors. The exact details and dates of the individual stages will be communicated on the official organizer's website.
The EWE Nordseelauf 2026 brings hundreds of athletes and their fans across the seven East Frisian Islands for the 24th time. Norderney plays a special role as a stage finish, as the infrastructure here provides space for a larger fan zone.
The exact stage program for 2026 will be published by the organizer on nordseelauf.com.
