Town festival on German Unity Day in the oldest town of the Hunsrück
The Altstadtfest Kirchberg is one of the most traditional events in the Hunsrück and deliberately uses October 3rd, a date that offers locals and guests from the Rhein-Hunsrück district as well as the neighboring regions of Mosel, Nahe, and Mittelrhein a long day of celebration. Kirchberg, documented as a town since the 11th century, is considered the oldest town in the Hunsrück and visibly carries this historical heritage in its cityscape — half-timbered houses, narrow alleys, the Schmuckturm of the parish church, and the traditional Meisterhaus form the backdrop of the festival.
The concept follows a decentralized logic: instead of a single main stage, various squares in the old town are utilized. Between the Meisterhaus and the church, a quieter atmosphere with acoustic music and meeting spaces is created, while the Neu- und Altmarkt are significantly livelier — here you'll find amusement rides, club stalls, food trucks, and larger music stages. "Music in many facets" is the motto: from cover bands to Schlager and folk music, to DJ sets and singer-songwriter performances, the program covers a wide spectrum.
Local clubs and associations — fire department, sports clubs, religious communities, carnival society — run their own stalls and shape the character of the festival as a true community celebration. Gastronomically, Hunsrück specialties dominate: hearty sausages, "Hunsrücker Spießbraten" (roast pork on a spit) cooked over a beechwood fire, potato pancakes (Reibekuchen), Flammkuchen, and of course, wines from vintners from the Nahe and Mosel regions. Shops open for extended hours complement the program in the morning and afternoon.
For families, there is a dedicated area with a children's carousel, face painting, and hands-on activities. In the late afternoon and evening, the mood shifts from a family festival to a party — the stages heat up, the town center becomes an open-air dance floor, and the festival traditionally lasts into the night.
With October 3, 2026, the Altstadtfest coincides with a public holiday, which, based on experience, noticeably increases visitor numbers. The program relies on the proven mix of music, culinary delights, community engagement, and family offerings. Shops open for business in the morning and early afternoon invite visitors to stroll, while from the late afternoon onwards, the focus shifts to the stage program and social gatherings.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: musical opening on the market square, several parallel stages with different styles, family activities around the Meisterhaus and church, and an evening program with cover bands or DJ sets.
The exact lineup for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: a broad musical offering, strong participation from local clubs, and a culinary focus on Hunsrück specialties.
Getting there: Kirchberg is conveniently located in the Rhein-Hunsrück district, near the A 61 motorway (Rheinböllen exit) and the B 50 (Hunsrückhöhenstraße). It's only about 10 km from Frankfurt-Hahn Airport. Parking is available on the outskirts of town and in designated festival parking lots — the town center is largely closed off during the festival.
Admission: Free. Access to the entire festival grounds is possible without a ticket; food, drinks, and rides are subject to charge.
Family-friendliness: Very good — children's area, carousel, short distances.
Accessibility: The old town is mostly level, but with cobblestone streets — wheelchair and walker users should come with assistance.
