About Weihnachtsmarkt Buer

The Weihnachtsmarkt Buer transforms the Buer town center from late November until just before Christmas Eve into a nostalgic Christmas village. In the pedestrian zone of Gelsenkirchen's northern district, wooden huts offer handmade crafts, regional food, and mulled wine variations from the Ruhr area. The traditional start is the Christmas parade with music groups and clubs, while weekends feature family programs with craft activities for children, music groups from the Ruhr area, and performances by local schools, all contributing to the nostalgic atmosphere. With its calm, family-friendly note, Buer offers an alternative to the hectic Cranger Weihnachtszauber in Herne and the big city hustle in Essen or Dortmund.

Advent Magic in the Northern Ruhr Area

If you're in the northern Ruhr area in December, the Weihnachtsmarkt Buer is one of the region's traditional Advent markets. Buer is the northernmost district of Gelsenkirchen (North Rhine-Westphalia, administrative district of Münster) and has retained a village-like flair with its own town center, pedestrian zone, and historic market square – perfect for a classic Christmas market. The Werbegemeinschaft Buer (Buer Business Association) organizes the market annually, managing stall assignments and the supporting program.

The Christmas Village

At the heart of the market is the so-called Weihnachtsdorf Buer (Buer Christmas Village) – a collection of wooden huts in a typically nostalgic style, clustered around Goldbergplatz and the adjacent pedestrian zones of Hochstraße and Springestraße. The huts are elaborately decorated with fir branches, fairy lights, and straw bales. The offerings are classic Christmas market fare: mulled wine in various versions (red, white, with a shot), bratwurst, potato pancakes (Reibekuchen), candied almonds, crêpes, and hot chocolate for the little ones. Artisans offer nativity figures, wood carvings, knitted hats, Advent wreaths, and unique gift ideas.

Christmas Parade

One of the highlights is the traditional Christmas parade through Buer's town center, which marks the opening. With music groups, marching bands, clubs, and sometimes illuminated floats, the parade proceeds from Buer station towards the market square. Santa Claus usually rides at the end of the procession, handing out sweets to children. On Advent weekends, a rotating stage program features school choirs from Gelsenkirchen, brass bands, music schools, and local bands.

Family and Club Program

The market is distinctly family-oriented. A children's carousel spins on Goldbergplatz, and there are also craft activities in the Buer City Library, storytelling sessions in the bookstore, and a craft afternoon in one of the huts. Clubs from Buer – from the St. Urbanus parish to the TUS Buer dance club – run individual stalls, raising funds for their youth work.

Buer in the Ruhr Area Context

Gelsenkirchen, often known as the "City of a Thousand Fires" for its Schalke industrial culture, finds a calm counterpoint in Buer to the southern city center. Historically, the district was part of the Recklinghausen district as an independent town until 1928 and retains its North German, Münsterland-influenced character. The Christmas market reflects this tradition: smaller than the Cranger Weihnachtszauber in Herne, quieter than the Dortmund Christmas market, but precisely for that reason, popular with families from the northern Ruhr area and southern Münsterland.

Open Sundays and Shopping

On at least one Advent Sunday, Buer's retailers in the pedestrian zone open their doors in parallel with the Christmas market – a welcome combined opportunity for shopping and mulled wine. The local business association announces the open Sunday in good time on weihnachtsdorf-buer.de.

Weihnachtsmarkt Buer — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Weihnachtsmarkt Buer is planned by the Werbegemeinschaft Buer for the period of approx. November 22 to December 23, 2026. As in previous years, the wooden huts of the Christmas village will be spread across Goldbergplatz and the adjacent pedestrian zones. The traditional Christmas parade will likely mark the opening again; on weekends, a stage program featuring school choirs and music groups will accompany the Advent magic.

What to Expect in 2026

As of May 2026, the Werbegemeinschaft Buer has not yet published the complete program. Based on experience, the following elements are expected to shape the program:

  • Opening day with a Christmas parade through Buer's town center
  • Daily mulled wine and snack stands run by local clubs
  • On Advent weekends: performances by choirs, marching bands, and music schools from Gelsenkirchen
  • Children's carousel on Goldbergplatz
  • Craft and storytelling sessions in the Buer library and bookstore
  • At least one Sunday with open shops

The final 2026 program will be announced promptly on weihnachtsdorf-buer.de.
