Free open-air festival on two stages in Gelsenkirchen's Buer district
Gelsenkirchen, with almost 261,000 inhabitants in the Ruhr area of North Rhine-Westphalia, is one of the typical large Ruhr cities with an industrial heritage and several historically independent districts. Buer, the northernmost district, was an independent city until 1928 and retains its own identity to this day. The monumental St. Urbanus Church — a neo-Gothic sacred building from the late 19th century, known in the region as the Buersche Dom (Buer Cathedral) — towers over the center of Buer. The festival takes place on the Domplatte in front of this building.
The motto of Rock am Dom Gelsenkirchen is programmatic. The festival is free, open air, and live — with a distinct preference for Unplugged sets and acoustic arrangements. Bands from Gelsenkirchen, the Ruhr area, and all of North Rhine-Westphalia are invited, who can prove themselves with acoustically oriented setlists. The program genres range from Pop and Rock to Reggae, Singer/Songwriter, and Acoustic Folk.
The festival uses two venues: The Domplatte St. Urbanus is the main stage — directly in front of the church, with the sacred building as an imposing backdrop. The second venue is the Michaelshaus at Hochstraße 47, with the adjacent Urbanus-Park: here is the Kulturbiergarten, which also operates as a venue under the festival's umbrella outside the main weekend.
The organizer is the Förderverein Rock am Dom Gelsenkirchen e.V. (Support Association Rock am Dom Gelsenkirchen), chaired by Andreas Szepan. The association is run by volunteers and uses the proceeds from catering and donations for the program design. The connection to the St. Urbanus parish is close: the festival is not a religious event, but a secular district festival — the parish cooperates by providing the Domplatte.
In addition to the main weekend, the support association operates the Kulturbiergarten Buer at the Michaelshaus from July 30 to August 16, 2026, with a mix of live music, comedy, and cabaret. This effectively extends the program over several weeks — and makes Rock am Dom more than just a weekend festival.
Gelsenkirchen-Buer has a firm place in the Ruhr area event calendar in August — alongside major acts like Juicy Beats Dortmund or Tiger Lou Bochum, Rock am Dom positions itself as a small, charming, free format with clear roots in the district. Those looking for the authentic Ruhr area festival feeling without ticket prices and big-city hustle and bustle should come to Buer.
Rock am Dom Gelsenkirchen 2026 will take place on August 28 and 29. The organizer is the support association Rock am Dom Gelsenkirchen e.V. Free admission.
