Ten days of Christmas spirit between Hanseatic charm and Sauerland tradition
Attendorn is one of the oldest towns in the Sauerland region — a Hanseatic city with town privileges since 1222, perched high on a spur between the Bigge and Lenne rivers. This historic setting makes its Christmas market something special: no anonymous big-city hustle and bustle, but a compact staging in the shadow of the late Gothic parish church of St. Johannes Baptist, the famous "Sauerland Cathedral".
The market is spread across the market square between the Südsauerlandmuseum and the parish church. Eleven rustic wooden huts form the core. These are complemented by decorated Christmas trees, festive lighting, and a large mulled wine stand, which becomes the town's social meeting point every year. The scent of mulled wine, roasted almonds, and bratwurst hangs over the cobblestones, while the huts offer wood carvings, gifts, seasonal decorations, and culinary specialties.
A special feature: Clubs, kindergartens, and non-profit organizations take turns at one of the huts daily. Sometimes a school sells homemade cookies, sometimes a traditional costume association presents homemade liqueurs, and sometimes a relief organization collects donations. This rotating participation is living civil society — the market doesn't belong to an agency, but to the town and its people.
A small stage in the market square offers a platform for regional musicians, choirs, and solo artists — from brass bands to school choirs. St. Nicholas traditionally visits the market and distributes small gifts to the youngest visitors. On the eve of the opening, there is regularly a sing-along concert in the parish church, which musically ushers in the Advent season.
What sets the Attendorn Christmas market apart from many other small markets: the third Advent weekend (December 12th–13th, 2026). This is when the market grows beyond itself and becomes a "Christmas City" — the entire city center fills with additional stalls, shops are open on Sundays, and small themed corners emerge in the pedestrian zone. It's the moment when the Hanseatic city shows what it has to offer in terms of Advent spirit.
Anyone tired of the hustle and bustle of Cologne or Dortmund and looking for a mix of genuine tradition, manageable size, and honest commitment will find exactly that in Attendorn. The market is not spectacular — it is authentic. And in December 2026, that might be the greater luxury.
On December 12th and 13th, the market expands: additional stalls throughout the city center, extended Sunday shopping hours on Dec 13th, themed corners in the pedestrian zone.
Detailed program will be published in November 2026 on attendorn.de.
