World's largest gathering of the dark scene at Pentecost
What began in 1992 with a single festival evening in Leipzig is now the world's largest festival of the dark scene: the Wave-Gotik-Treffen. For four days, thousands of visitors in Victorian, medieval, or cyberpunk attire transform Leipzig's city center – a sight that makes the trade fair city in the Leipzig district a unique stage worldwide. The WGT is considered a cultural highlight of Saxony and is now an integral part of the city's identity.
Unlike classic open-air festivals, the WGT is deliberately decentralized: concerts, readings, classical evenings, theater performances, film screenings, and parties are spread across more than 40 venues throughout Leipzig. The central anchors are the Agra exhibition park with its large festival tent, the Parkbühne in Clara-Zetkin-Park, the Moritzbastei, the Werk II, the Kohlrabizirkus, the Leipzig Opera, as well as several churches used for classical concerts or ambient performances.
In addition to concerts – from dark synthwave acts and industrial giants to black metal and medieval rock – the WGT offers a huge supporting program. The famous Victorian Picnic in Clara-Zetkin-Park on Whit Sunday is a highlight in itself: hundreds of visitors in historical costumes populate the meadow. There are also medieval markets, exhibitions in the Grassi Museum ("Grassi Goes Gotik"), the "Schwarze Witwe" tour of the Südfriedhof cemetery, film screenings, readings, discussions at the Budde-Haus, and parties until the early hours.
Characteristic of the WGT is its close integration with the city: restaurants, cafés, hairdressers, and even bakeries cater to the black scene clientele, and many events are accessible even without an official festival wristband (medieval markets, picnic, city stroll). The WGT is therefore not just a festival, but a major cultural event that shapes Leipzig for four days.
WGT 2026 continues the proven decentralized format: concerts spread throughout the city, classical evenings in Leipzig churches, parties at Werk II, Moritzbastei, and Kohlrabizirkus, plus readings, exhibitions, and the traditional Victorian Picnic on Whit Sunday in Clara-Zetkin-Park.
Confirmed artists (as of April 2026, over 169 acts) include Kim Wilde, Einstürzende Neubauten, Moonspell, Clan of Xymox, Covenant, Suicide Commando, Das Ich, and Aesthetic Perfection. The full lineup and schedule will be published on wave-gotik-treffen.de.
The complete day-by-day lineup and schedule will be published on wave-gotik-treffen.de before the festival and distributed via the official program booklet.
Leipzig is accessible by ICE and Regio trains from all over Germany. The Agra exhibition park is located in the south of the city (tram lines 9 and 11). With the WGT wristband, use of the MDV (Mitteldeutscher Verkehrsverbund) is included.
4-day wristband €190 (as of 2026), single-day tickets available. Camping on the Agra grounds is possible (separate ticket purchase).
With wristband: all concerts, theater, classical concerts, parties, public transport. Without wristband: medieval markets (Heidnisches Dorf, Medieval Tent Agra), Victorian Picnic, city stroll, some readings.
