East Germany's largest hiking event — from May 8 to 10, 2026, around Markkleeberg
What began over two decades ago as a small local initiative by the association Leipziger Wanderer e.V. has developed into the largest hiking event in East Germany: The 7-Seen-Wanderung attracts around 7,000 hiking enthusiasts to the Leipziger Neuseenland around Markkleeberg (Leipzig district, Saxony) every May. The 22nd edition will take place from May 8 to 10, 2026 — again with over 70 different tours through one of Germany's youngest and most fascinating cultural landscapes. Created from former open-cast lignite mines, more than 20 artificial lakes with a total water surface of around 70 km² have emerged here in recent decades.
The range of tours is exceptionally broad: unguided tours, thematic guided tours, children's and family tours, as well as active and health tours. Ambitious long-distance hikers dare to take on the XXL classics 'Neuseenland XXL' and 'Dreiländertour XXL' (each around 100 km) — two of the toughest hiking marathons in East Germany. In addition, there are numerous shorter routes around Markkleeberger See, Cospudener See, Zwenkauer See, Störmthaler See, and other bodies of water.
Beyond classic hiking, the 7-Seen-Wanderung also offers unusual formats: stand-up paddling tours across the lakes, thematic guided tours on the mining, industrial, and natural history of the Neuseenland, as well as the historic VINETA boat tour on the Störmthaler See — a floating church building that commemorates the sunken village of Magdeborn. The official 2026 hiking shirt is offered for every tour.
Markkleeberg is located in the Leipzig district in Saxony, immediately south of the metropolis of Leipzig — and is now the tourist gateway to the Neuseenland. Those who combine the 7-Seen-Wanderung with a weekend stay will discover Europe's youngest lake landscape, well-developed with cycle paths, beaches, viewpoints (e.g., Bistumshöhe or the Rote Hütte observation tower), and a growing culinary scene. Registrations for guided tours begin on January 1, 2026, and for unguided tours on November 28, 2025 (Early-Bird Special).
The 22nd edition of the 7-Seen-Wanderung extends from Friday, May 8, 2026, to Sunday, May 10, 2026, across the varied lake landscape of the Leipziger Neuseenland around Markkleeberg. As early as the end of November 2025, the registration channel for unguided tours opened (with an Early-Bird Special until January 1, 2026); guided tours will be activated from January 1, 2026.
With over 70 guided and unguided routes through the Neuseenland, the 2026 event continues the tradition of previous years. By the end of 2025, nearly 6,000 hiking fans had already registered.
Registration fees vary depending on the tour chosen (unguided from approx. €15, guided and XXL from approx. €25–€45). Early-Bird Special for unguided tours until January 1, 2026.
