Solingen's cultural series between stage and boulevard — 29th edition between May and November
The Walder Theatertage are to Solingen what a "City Theatre" would be in larger cities — only without a permanent venue. The series is spread from May to November across several Solingen stages, squares, and halls, bringing international artists to the Wald district of the Westphalian city (which is also a borough and neighbourhood) every year. The non-profit association Walder Theatertage e.V. is the organiser, curating the programme continuously since the late 1990s.
The season regularly begins with the StartRampe — a platform for young stage artists who present their initial programmes here to a focused audience. The Helga-Leister-Haus in Solingen-Wald is home to this format. It is a deliberately accessible entry point into the season, giving the programme its own distinct character: established stage professionals and newcomers appear as equals in the schedule.
The highlight of the series is traditionally the International Street Theatre Festival in June. The centre of Wald transforms into an open stage for a weekend: acrobatics, dance theatre, performance, music, interactive stations for children. The parallel art and culinary mile along Stresemannstraße brings regional and French artists into workshops and studios; this makes Wald one of the liveliest districts of Solingen that weekend.
Solingen is a polycentric city in the Bergisches Land region (state of North Rhine-Westphalia, independent city) — it consists of several historically independent towns that merged in 1929 to form the 'Klingenstadt' (City of Blades). Wald is one of them, as is Gräfrath with its Lichtturm, a former water tower that is now a venue. The Walder Theatertage specifically leverage this polycentric structure: they include several districts in their programme and culturally connect the individual communities.
In November, the season concludes with the awarding of the Solingen Theatre and Cabaret Prize — an now-renowned award for the independent scene, given annually to a stage contribution with particular resonance. This closes the loop from the StartRampe for young artists in May to the recognition of established stage work in late autumn.
Season opening on May 28 with StartRampe 2.0 at the Helga-Leister-Haus, Solingen-Wald. June will feature several highlights: Stefan Waghubinger with “Versunkene Sätze" (June 6, Lichtturm Gräfrath), Spanish artist Txema Muñoz with “GOTA" (June 17, Walder Stadtsaal), the International Street Theatre Festival on June 19 and 20 in the centre of Wald, and the 2026 Theatre Gala on June 20.
In autumn, the Theatertage continue with the French company Vilcanota (“De loin si près", September 26) and the quartet led by cellist Matthieu Saglio (“Voices", November 13). The season finale will be the awarding of the Theatre and Cabaret Prize on November 21.
