Schloss Grünewald — The Setting
Schloss Grünewald in Solingen-Gräfrath is a 14th-century Bergisch manor house, nestled in a gentle hilly landscape on the edge of the Bergisches Land region. Precisely this architecture — simple, white, with dark timber-frame details — forms the perfect backdrop for a romantic Christmas market. For three Advent weekends, the castle grounds transform into a small, curated market with a special character.
What Makes the Adventstraum Special
Over 1,500 meters of fairy lights entwine trees, pavilions, and footpaths. Torches line the paths, fire pits provide warmth. Around 100 exhibitors present their crafts:
- Jewellery and silver art
- Ceramics and pottery
- Textiles, wool products, felt art
- Paintings, sculptures, arts and crafts
- Bergisch specialities and gift items
Culinary Delights with Character
Instead of the usual mass-produced goods, you'll find a hand-picked selection at the Adventstraum: Alsatian Flammkuchen from a wood-fired oven, roasted suckling pig, Swiss raclette, candied almonds, roasted chestnuts, mulled wine in custom mugs, and punch varieties from dry to sweet. For those who prefer savoury, there are also hearty soups and game dishes.
Family Programme — From Wishing Star to Witch's Game
Families will find a dedicated programme: a Wishing Star tent with a fairy, gingerbread house crafting, medieval games, little magicians, and dragon trails. The children are often occupied longer than the parents while they sample the mulled wine.
Opening Hours — Three Weekends
The Adventstraum opens on four Advent weekends in December, Friday to Sunday each. Fridays from 2 PM to 9 PM (last admission 8 PM), Saturdays and Sundays from 11 AM to 8 PM (last admission 7 PM). Specifically for 2026: likely the weekends of 27–29 Nov, 4–6 Dec, 11–13 Dec, and 18–20 Dec.
Practical Information
The castle grounds are not accessible — a roughly 400-meter footpath leads to the castle from the Dyckerfeld car park. A shuttle bus runs on weekends from the Dyckerfeld industrial area for €2 round trip. Children up to 16 years old get in for free.
