Folk Music in the North
The Volksmusikfest in Seeth-Ekholt is an example of a tradition cherished in many North German villages: Bavarian and Alpine brass music far from the Alps. The fact that a dedicated folk music festival is celebrated in the Pinneberg district — some 600 kilometers north of Munich — is due to Schleswig-Holstein's strong club landscape: Where there are fire brigades, shooting clubs, and music societies, there are also occasions for brass music. The Seeth-Ekholt Volunteer Fire Brigade uses the festival to bring the village community together and, at the same time, to promote fire brigade work.
Festhalle Sahlmann
The venue is the community's Festhalle, which provides a fitting setting for such events — a spacious hall with a stage, bar, dance floor, and several hundred seats at long festival tables. The format is classic: a stage with a brass band performing, long rows of beer benches in front, and a lively atmosphere.
Program
The usual program includes:
- Performance by a traditional costume or brass band — usually featuring traditional Bavarian and Alpine music
- Dance floor — communal polka and waltz dancing
- Catering — draft beer, non-alcoholic beverages, hearty food such as sausages and sauerkraut, pretzels, schnitzel
- Sociable atmosphere — singing along to classic folk music songs, swaying in groups, birthday serenades
- Over 300 guests at the larger events — members of the fire brigade and their families, neighboring communities, folk music fans from the district
Fire Brigade's Commitment
The Volksmusikfest is more than just a music event — it is the most important annual self-affirmation for the fire brigade. It demonstrates how deeply the FFW is embedded in village life: members, their families, retirees, and friendly fire brigades from neighboring villages and even other federal states travel to attend. The event combines tradition, promotion, fundraising, and social gathering.
Seeth-Ekholt — Municipality in the Pinneberg District
Seeth-Ekholt is a municipality with around 1,300 inhabitants in the Pinneberg district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein — a rural community north of Elmshorn and 40 kilometers northwest of Hamburg. The region is characterized by small villages and farms; the fire brigade is a central village institution.
