Tips
Combine your market visit with a tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Völklingen Ironworks (approx. 1 km from the market).
Spring Festival in the City of Völklingen Ironworks
Völklingen is primarily known to many travellers as the location of the UNESCO World Heritage Völklingen Ironworks – the iconic, disused 19th-century ironworks, the only steel-producing plant of its time to be fully preserved, which today hosts concerts, exhibitions, and festivals. But Völklingen is more: a lively industrial city in the Saarbrücken district with almost 39,000 inhabitants and a growing city centre initiative. The Völklingen Spring Market, held annually in April, is one of the most visible symbols of this transformation.
Concept: Market, Shopping, Funfair – One Day
The market combines three elements into a concentrated city festival: a classic Spring Market with around 40 stalls around the Rathausplatz, a Sunday shopping event from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. that brings the retail sector into play, and the final day of the Völklingen Easter Funfair, which reopens its rides between Otto-Hemmer-Platz and Hindenburgplatz from 1 p.m. onwards. This makes the day a compact mix of family stroll, shopping tour, and folk festival (Volksfest).
What You'll Find at the Market
At the 40 stalls, you'll find handmade jewellery, garden and home decorations, spring flowers, candles, wood and leather goods, pet accessories, handicrafts, and seasonal delicacies. The gastronomic offer ranges from Saarland barbecue specialities and creative hot dogs to classic French Flammkuchen, Asian noodle dishes, original Spanish churros, and funfair snacks. A real mix of treats – also linguistically inspired by the Greater Region Saar-Lor-Lux.
Music and Family Programme
The Musikverein Gugge Mol e.V. – a Guggenmusik brass band known for its colourful costumes and cheerful sound – and DJ JOA (Achim Rupp) provide the atmosphere. For families, there's a free children's area with a bouncy castle, giant slide, face painting, airbrush tattoos, and balloon modelling. The stage programme for children runs all afternoon.
Accompanying City Programme
The St. Eligius Church opens its doors to visitors from 2 p.m. onwards – a good opportunity to get to know the historic parish church of the industrial city. The City Library invites you to an "Open Library Day" from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This combination makes the Spring Market more than just a sales festival – it's a day when the city presents itself together.
Embedded in Völklingen's Transformation
Völklingen is a city in transition: After the end of iron production in 1986, the town has continuously repositioned itself, gained international attention with the UNESCO World Heritage award in 1994, and today struggles with the structural problems of many former industrial cities. Initiatives like the Spring Market are part of the urban development efforts to strengthen the city centre as a living space again. Anyone visiting Völklingen should definitely also visit the Völklingen Ironworks, which is just a few minutes away by car or bus.
