17 days of Christmas market with St. Nicholas and angels daily from 5 PM from November 27 to December 13, 2026
The Christmas market in Mülheim's old town is one of the established Christmas market formats in the western Ruhr area. From November 27 to December 13, 2026 – over two and a half weeks – the market opens at Pastor-Barnstein-Platz in the historic Mülheim old town. 17 days of Advent with mulled wine, gingerbread, arts and crafts, and a daily St. Nicholas experience.
The opening hours are designed so that both working people after work and families on weekends can visit the market:
The venue is Pastor-Barnstein-Platz in Mülheim's old town (postal code 45468) – a small, historically grown square with half-timbered and sandstone houses around the market triangle. Mülheim's old town is a distinct, listed area – compact, walkable, far from main traffic. An unusually intimate setting for a Christmas market in the Ruhr area.
One of the market's most characteristic elements: St. Nicholas and angels are personally present ON EVERY market day from 5:00 PM and hand out cuddly toys to the children. Not just on December 6th, not just at the market's start – on all 17 market days. This makes the Mülheim old town Christmas market unusually family-friendly: children can visit the market multiple times, and St. Nicholas is always there.
The organizer is Pro Altstadt e.V. – a civic initiative for Mülheim's old town. The association organizes other old town events throughout the year; the Christmas market is its most important date. Participation extends to the old town residents, restaurateurs, business people, and artists from the Mülheim area.
Mülheim's old town is one of the most charming historic city centers in the western Ruhr area. Huguenot architecture, half-timbered houses, sandstone buildings, the town hall, St. Peter's Church – a dense, protected city core that is unusual for the otherwise industrially shaped neighboring cities of Duisburg, Essen, and Oberhausen. The Christmas market makes this contrast tangible.

Arts and crafts, mulled wine, Feuerzangenbowle, potato pancakes, almonds, gingerbread. On select evenings, choirs and brass ensembles.
