Open-air gastronomy on the Ruhr — 11 restaurants, 4 days of enjoyment
For years, the Culinary Meeting Mülheim has been one of the most distinctive open-air gastronomy events in the Ruhr area. The venue is the most beautiful part of Mülheim's city center: the Ruhr banks between Schlossbrücke and Schleuseninsel, located "Auf dem Dudel," with a view of the river and the postcard-romantic industrial backdrop of the Ruhr. For four days, Mülheim's top restaurants will serve small and large dishes right by the water.
The event brings together eleven of Mülheim's best restaurants in one place — including the Alte Metzgerei, Bar In Motion, Bliss, and other establishments that are usually scattered throughout the city. Each stand serves a selection of its best dishes in small portions — the concept is similar to street food festivals, but consistently curated by established restaurants instead of food trucks. International cuisine, regional classics, vegetarian options.
Every day features different live musical accompaniment, adapted to the event's daily rhythm:
The Ruhr banks are Mülheim's park-like river promenade, located between the Schlossbrücke (connecting to the city center) and the Schleuseninsel — a small island with a weir mill and historic lock. In summer, this is one of the city's most popular spots: shady trees, a sunbathing lawn, water. During the Culinary Meeting, this atmosphere condenses into a relaxed festival vibe — with no admission fee, no crowding, and tables and bistro sets on the lawn.
Mülheim, with around 172,000 inhabitants, is one of the medium-sized cities in the Ruhr area, located between Duisburg, Essen, and Oberhausen. The city has a special character: on the one hand, industrial history (Stinnes heritage); on the other, plenty of green along the Ruhr and a vibrant gastronomic scene. The Culinary Meeting showcases this culinary side.
The event area is accessible and explicitly family-friendly. Children can play on the lawn, the paths are level, and toilets and a changing table are available on-site. Groups will find ample space — tables and benches are distributed throughout the Ruhr banks.
The 2026 edition repeats the proven format: curated restaurant selection, waterside setting, relaxed open-air atmosphere. Restaurants and music program are partially confirmed (see program); details will be communicated via mein-muelheim.de and muelheim-ruhr.de.
Free admission. Food items per stand: small bites €4–€8, main courses €10–€16, drinks €3–€7. Cocktails and wines at Bar In Motion are higher.
By public transport: U-Bahn lines U18, U102, U104, U112, tram line 901, and several bus lines to the "Stadtmitte" stop — from there, a 5-minute walk to the Ruhr banks.
By car: Parking available at Wasserbahnhof, in city center parking garages, and at the Stadthalle parking lot.
