DTU-approved school duathlon for children and teenagers aged 2012–2019 at Luisenschule
The Mülheim Junior Duathlon is one of the largest school sports events in the western Ruhr area: a DTU-approved competition (German Triathlon Union) specifically designed for children and teenagers. The 5th edition takes place on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at the Luisenschule in Mülheim an der Ruhr — organized by the club Marathon und Triathlon Mülheim e.V., one of the most active endurance sports clubs in the western Ruhr area.
The duathlon classically combines running, cycling, and running — distances are staggered by age, so even children from 6 years old can participate. Eligible participants are those born between 2012 and 2019 (i.e., 6 to 13 years old), divided into age groups. E-bikes and racing bikes are not allowed — participants use regular children's and youth bikes, making the competition fair and accessible.
In the afternoon — immediately following the Junior Duathlon — the Ruhrauen Fun Run takes place, an adult race over 5 and 10 kilometers. Last year in 2025, around 450 runners participated, with the course leading over asphalt service paths and paved trails through the idyllic Ruhrauen. Families can stay active all day: children in the morning, parents in the afternoon.
The organizing club Marathon und Triathlon Mülheim e.V. is deeply rooted in Mülheim's local sports scene, supporting athletes from schoolchildren to masters. The DTU approval for the Junior Duathlon is a seal of quality: competition rules, safety, and course layout meet national triathlon standards.
Mülheim an der Ruhr is located between Essen and Duisburg and uses the Ruhrauen (Ruhr meadows) as its natural sports ground. The Luisenschule is one of the city's traditional schools and offers the necessary infrastructure for competitive events. Visitors to the Junior Duathlon can enjoy a walk or bike ride along the Ruhr afterward — an ideal family sports weekend.
The DTU-approved Junior Duathlon combines running and cycling over age-appropriate distances for children aged 6 to 13. Afterward, the open Ruhrauen Fun Run takes place over 5 and 10 km.
