Two Days of Music, Culture, and Enjoyment in the Heart of the Former Steel City
The Völklingen City Festival is the latest success story in the Saarland's city festival scene. After a multi-year hiatus, the festival returned to the city center in 2025 — on the initiative of Mayor Stephan Tautz, who made the revitalization of the city core his top priority. "Our city center is the heart of Völklingen — and a heart must beat!" — this phrase has since become the festival's motto.
Unlike many city festivals that focus on a single square, the Völklingen City Festival utilizes the three central areas of the city center: Adolph-Kolping-Platz, the Pfarrgarten, and the Forbacher Passage. This distributes the festival crowd throughout the entire pedestrian zone, making all shops and restaurants part of the event.
Two main stages offer a diverse music program — from local bands of the Saarland music scene and regional acts to DJs. In the afternoon, family-friendly and acoustic music dominates, while in the late afternoon and evening, rock, pop, and cover bands take over, before late DJ sets carry the festival into the night.
The food combines Saarland classics (Schwenker, Lyoner, Dibbelabbes) with international street food variety. Local restaurateurs participate with their own stands or special festival menus. The regional beer and wine scene — from Bruchsaler Karlsberg to smaller Saarland breweries — caters to the festival-goers.
A dedicated area is specifically for families: play areas, a children's carousel, bouncy castle, creative hands-on activities with regional clubs, and a youth culture stage with acts from the local scene.
What sets Völklingen apart from other medium-sized towns in Saarland is the UNESCO World Heritage site Völklinger Hütte — one of Europe's most spectacular industrial monuments, a five-minute walk from the festival grounds. Combining a festival visit with a tour of the blast furnaces offers a typical Saarland day between a folk festival (Volksfest) and heavy industrial history.
Following the acclaimed return of the festival in 2025, the City of Völklingen, together with GWIS mbH, is organizing the second edition in the city center. The detailed program schedule with artist names is expected to be published in May 2026 on voelklingen.de and gwis-voelklingen.de.
Specific bands and acts will be announced with the official program.
Free admission. Food and drinks available at market stalls and from local restaurants.
