Family Festival of the Gartenstadt Vahr with the motto Vahr away
When the Gartenstadt Vahr celebrates, it's called Vahr away. The VAHRadies district festival turns the Örreler Weg into a festival mile on a summer afternoon: stage, market stalls, hands-on activities, and culinary offerings are lined up, and the district in Bremen's southeast shows what it has to offer. It is one of those neighborhood festivals in the Bremen region where the cohesion of a quarter becomes visible and tangible for an afternoon.
The stage features music, dance, and performances, along with raffles and physical activities. Creative stations are available for children — painting bags, crafting, having portraits drawn. Hobby artists sell homemade goods and local delicacies at market stalls, and barbecue and drink stations provide refreshments. The festival is deliberately designed to be accessible: no admission fee, short distances, and a program that engages both young and old.
VAHRadies is organized by the housing company GEWOBA, which significantly shapes the Gartenstadt Vahr. Numerous local institutions participate, including the cultural foundation, mothers' centers, NABU, the Digital Impact Lab, the leisure center, the community center, and the citizens' center. The neighborhood management emphasizes the spirit of diversity: many Vahr residents have roots elsewhere — the district is their home today and is enriched by them.
Vahr is one of Bremen's youngest districts. After World War II, the Hanseatic city lacked around one hundred thousand homes; in 1954, construction began on the Gartenstadt Vahr with approximately 2,200 apartments, and in 1959, Vahr became its own district. Between 1957 and 1962, the adjacent Neue Vahr was built — with almost 12,000 apartments, it was one of the largest housing projects in Europe at the time. Its landmark is the listed Aalto high-rise, built between 1960 and 1963 by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto on behalf of GEWOBA — a key work of organic modernism. While the Neue Vahr appears urban and large-scale, the Gartenstadt Vahr remains green to this day, with extensive allotment gardens and mixed development. VAHRadies makes this special urban heritage tangible as a social meeting point and strengthens cohesion in the neighborhood.
For the 2026 edition, the Örreler Weg will once again transform into Vahradies on June 13. The program includes a stage show with music and dance, hands-on activities, physical activities, market stalls with homemade goods, and culinary specialties. The festival is organized by GEWOBA in collaboration with numerous institutions from the district.
Under the motto “Vahr away,” the Örreler Weg transforms into a festival promenade. The festival celebrates the diversity of the district – many residents have international roots and Vahr as their home.
Organized by GEWOBA in collaboration with cultural associations, mothers' centers, environmental groups, and community centers of the district. The detailed stage program for 2026 with acts and times will be announced shortly before the date via vahreport.de and GEWOBA.
The festival takes place at Örreler Weg in the Gartenstadt Vahr (28329 Bremen). The district is well connected to Bremen's city center by tram and bus.
Admission is free. The festival runs on a Saturday afternoon from approximately 1 PM to 6 PM.
