Fairy tales, legends, and storytelling at the stations of Abenberg Castle, combined with a Franconian crafts market
Abenberg Castle in the Roth district – one of the most beautiful preserved hilltop castle ensembles in Central Franconia – has been the venue for a festival of the art of storytelling for several years. The Storytelling Festival with Crafts Market combines the tradition of oral storytelling with the experience of a medieval site: narrow spiral staircases, halls, inner courtyards, and castle walls become stations where storytellers perform in turn.
The storytelling format is deliberately not overloaded with music or staging, but relies on the pure power of the voice: guided tours of stations, small groups, intensive encounters between storytellers and the audience. The material includes folk tales, Franconian legends, international myths, historical anecdotes, and original stories.
In parallel, a Franconian crafts market opens at the castle: blacksmithing demonstrations, felting, pottery, woodturning, basket weaving – alongside stalls with artisan crafts, regional products, and food. The festival is explicitly family-friendly but also suitable for adults seeking refined storytelling evenings.
The venue is Abenberg Castle in the town of Abenberg (Roth district, Bavaria), one of the most important stops along the Castle Road. The castle houses the Bobbin Lace Museum and the House Communication Museum, independently runs a dense program of events, and cooperates with the neighboring Hotel Burg Abenberg.
On September 27, 2026, Abenberg Castle will host its fifth edition of the Storytelling Festival – now a firm fixture in the castle's autumn program. The station concept, intimate groups, and a high-caliber selection of storytellers have been established since the first edition.
Accompanying this, the Crafts Market will open on the castle grounds: live craft demonstrations, Franconian artisan crafts, and regional food stalls. A family-friendly program that combines storytelling and experience.
The complete lineup of storytellers and the detailed station assignments will be announced in advance by the Abenberg Castle administration on burg-abenberg.de. Previous editions featured storytellers such as Martin Ellrodt, Julia Klein, Kerstin Lauterbach, Dirk Nowakowski, and Michl Zirk.
