Franconian Kärwa in the Unterasbach district of Oberasbach
Oberasbach in the Fürth district (Middle Franconia) traditionally celebrates four Kirchweihen per year — one in each of the districts of Oberasbach (Altort), Altenberg, Unterasbach, and Rehdorf. The Unterasbacher Kirchweih, known locally as "Kärwa", takes place as the third in the Kärwa series at the end of July and boasts an unbroken tradition dating back to 1952.
The venue is the festival grounds at the corner of Frühlingstraße / Herbststraße, where the Stammtischgesellschaft Unterasbach sets up its large festival tent. The Kärwa kicks off on Thursday with the "Zwölfte" Kärwa-Schlachtschüssel — a convivial meal featuring traditional pork specialties, for which advance registration is required. On Friday, the Kärwaboum (Kärwa lads), Kärwamadli (Kärwa girls), and Kärwafrägger (Kärwa jesters) parade in traditional costume, and the First Mayor taps the first keg together with the club chairman and the Beer Queen.
On Sunday afternoon, the Kirchweih parade with flag bearers, music bands, Kärwaboum, and floats winds its way through the streets of Unterasbach. The parade is organized by the municipal cultural office in collaboration with local clubs. Afterwards, the procession returns to the festival grounds for celebrations late into the evening.
The Kärwamontag (Kärwa Monday) concludes with a visit to the two local kindergartens — carousel rides, fries, and drinks are traditionally free for the little ones. In the evening, the Kärwa winds down with dancing, brass music, and the "Last Maß" (last pint of beer).
Please note: Bringing alcoholic beverages onto the festival grounds is prohibited by a municipal ordinance from 2009. All drinks are served in the festival tent and at the stalls.
The 2026 Kärwa, as every year, is organized by the Stammtischgesellschaft Unterasbach under the chairmanship of Harald Patzelt. The festival grounds at the corner of Frühlingstraße/Herbststraße, with its large festival tent, carousels, food stalls, and traditional Kärwa atmosphere, is the venue for four days of festival culture.
The highlight of the weekend is the Kirchweih parade on Sunday at 2:00 PM, organized by the cultural office of the city of Oberasbach — this year on a shortened route through Unterasbach. Flag bearers, music bands, Kärwaboum with ribbons in the colors of the Kärwa societies, and floats parade through the district.
Organizer: Stammtischgesellschaft Unterasbach, City of Oberasbach.
Take the S-Bahn line S 1 (Nuremberg – Hartmannshof – Bamberg) to Oberasbach-Unterasbach, then a short walk to the festival grounds. By car, take the B 14 or A 6 (exit Schwabach-Süd), parking is available on residential streets.
