Advent Season in the Monastery Town

Walkenried is one of Lower Saxony's most historic locations. The Cistercian monastery, dating back to the 12th century, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Mines of Rammelsberg, Old Town of Goslar and Upper Harz Water Management System' since 2010 and shapes the townscape with its Gothic monastery ruins. During Advent, this historical backdrop takes on a special magic: the ruins are atmospherically illuminated, and a lovingly designed Christmas market is set up in the town center, combining Walkenried's historical depth with lived Advent tradition.

Stalls and Atmosphere

The two-day market offers a selection of stalls with arts and crafts, Christmas decorations, regional specialties, and small gift ideas. Associations, artists, and private individuals from Walkenried, Zorge, Wieda, and the surrounding area present their offerings. Culinary delights include classic Advent treats: mulled wine (Glühwein), children's punch (Kinderpunsch), hot chocolate, bratwurst, crêpes, waffles, and roasted almonds. The scent of fir branches, baked goods, and mulled wine mixes with the Christmas lights to create an atmosphere reminiscent of Christmas markets of past generations.

In addition to the stalls, musical contributions from local choirs and music groups provide the right atmosphere. St. Nicholas (Nikolaus) or Santa Claus visits the market and gives gifts to the children.
