Berlin's annual showcase for Ukrainian cinema — feature film, documentary, short film, decentralized across numerous cinemas
The Ukrainian Film Festival Berlin (UFFB) was founded in 2020 by Ukrainian filmmakers and cultural workers in Berlin and has, in just a few years, become one of the most important showcases for Ukrainian cinema in Western Europe. With the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine in 2022, the festival has gained even more significance: it makes Ukrainian storytelling visible — beyond the headlines, in the images and voices of the directors themselves.
The 7th edition will take place from October 14 to 18, 2026. As in previous years, the festival is decentralized: the festival center is Silent Green Kulturquartier in Wedding, with its distinctive domed hall, complemented by screenings at Kino in der Kulturbrauerei, Zeiss-Großplanetarium, Acud Kino, Sputnik Kino, Il Kino, City Kino Wedding, Filmkunst 66, and Kino & Bar in der Königsstadt — a deliberate distribution across several Berlin districts.
The program includes three categories: feature films, documentaries, and short films. The focus is on Ukrainian productions and works by Ukrainian filmmakers in exile, as well as international films about Ukraine. Many screenings are German premieres; after the films, there are regular Q&A sessions with the female filmmakers, producers, and protagonists. An international short film competition is a permanent fixture of the festival (submission deadline 2026: August 15 via FilmFreeway, films up to 35 minutes, completed after January 1, 2025).
The organizer is the Berlin-based association Plivka — Initiative für unabhängige audiovisuelle Kunst und Kultur Berlin e. V., located at Schönhauser Allee 39A in Prenzlauer Berg. Plivka sees itself as a bridge between the Ukrainian film scene and the German audience, organizing film screenings, discussions, and workshops year-round — and curating the UFFB as the highlight of the year.
With an estimated over 100,000 Ukrainian residents, Berlin is home to one of the largest Ukrainian communities in the European Union. For many in the diaspora, the UFFB is a central meeting point: watching films together, hearing the language, seeing art — and at the same time, introducing the full spectrum of Ukrainian culture to the German-speaking public. The festival takes place in the federal state of Berlin, a city-state, and spans seven Berlin districts simultaneously.
Five days of cinema from and about Ukraine: From October 14 to 18, 2026, UFFB 2026 will present a selection of current feature films, documentaries, and short films by Ukrainian female directors, complemented by German premieres, retrospectives, and Q&A sessions with the filmmakers. The international short film award will be part of the competition; submissions are open until August 15, 2026, via FilmFreeway, with films up to 35 minutes completed after January 1, 2025, being eligible.
