45th edition of the Dahlenburg annual market around St. John's Church — three days with carousels and lantern procession
The Dahlenburg Martinimarkt dates back centuries to a market tradition centered around the feast day of Saint Martin (November 11th). In its current form as a funfair, it celebrates its 45th edition in 2026, making it a fixture in the annual market calendar of the Heath region. The organizer is the municipality of Dahlenburg, which coordinates the market together with showmen, the church community, and local associations.
Around 50 stalls and stands occupy the market square and surrounding areas. Classic carousels for the youngest visitors, a swing boat, a Ferris wheel, shooting galleries, game stalls, candy stands, crêperies, bratwurst stands, and mulled wine stalls form the usual repertoire. At first glance, the market resembles many North German fairs — but those who stay longer discover its unique charm: the market's size relative to the town creates an intimate, almost folk-like atmosphere rarely found in larger cities.
The highlight of the opening is the traditional lantern procession on Friday evening. Families and children gather at the designated time in the town center and parade through the streets with glowing lanterns — often homemade — to the festival grounds. The procession is accompanied by music, songs, and sometimes the figure of Saint Martin on horseback. The procession references St. Martin's Day in the church year and creates a warm atmosphere to kick off the market.
Friday, November 6th, the market is open from 6 PM to 1 AM — opening evening with lantern procession and full market activity. Saturday, November 7th, the market runs from 2 PM to 1 AM — main market day with crowds in the evening. Sunday, November 8th, the market is open from 2 PM to 8 PM — family day with a quieter conclusion. Throughout all three days, there are special promotions by individual showmen and associations.
As in previous years, the 2026 Martinimarkt will transform Dahlenburg into a small fairground island from Friday evening to Sunday evening. The mix of traditional carousels for children, larger rides for teenagers, classic shooting and game stalls, gastronomic offerings, and mulled wine stands creates a warm, festive autumn atmosphere. The lantern procession to open the market has always been the emotional start — many families design their lanterns with their children.
The exact detailed program of individual special events will be published by the municipality in advance. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
