Stocherkahnrennen 2026
The 2026 Tübingen Stocherkahnrennen will take place on Thursday, June 4, 2026 — Corpus Christi Day — on the Neckar between Eberhardsbrücke and Neckarinsel. Over 40 punting boats from Tübingen fraternities, student residences, sports clubs, and student teams will compete against each other, with one steerer and seven paddlers per boat.
According to Tübingen tradition, the organizer for 2026 is the previous year's losing team: the Alte Straßburger Burschenschaft Germania (loser 2025). The winner receives a trophy and a barrel of beer, the loser drinks half a liter of cod liver oil per person. Up to 15,000 spectators are expected.

One of the Funniest Spectacles in Tübingen's Event Calendar
The Tübingen Stocherkahnrennen is one of Germany's quirkiest and most endearing student traditions. The race has been held annually on Corpus Christi on the Neckar River in Tübingen's old town since 1956 — initiated by AKV Igel, a Tübingen student fraternity. Today, over 40 boats from fraternities, student residences, sports clubs, student teams, and some crazy Tübingen citizen groups register their 8-person teams: one punter at the stern, seven paddlers in front of him. The combination of sporting ambition, alcohol-fueled comedy, and soaked students makes the spectacle famous far beyond Tübingen.
Course, Turn, and Finish Line
The race course is about two kilometers long. It runs upstream from the start at Eberhardsbrücke to just before the Alte Burse, then makes an extremely tight turn under one of the bridges back. The finish line is at the west tip of the Neckarinsel. While professional teams seek clear lines, some boats already escalate during the turn — collisions, capsizes, and dripping wet moments of fate are guaranteed here. Hundreds stand at the bridge railings, on the Neckarinsel, and in the Stadtgarten to cheer, toast, or enjoy schadenfreude.
Cod Liver Oil for the Losers
The Tübingen punting boat tradition has two prizes. The winning team receives a challenge trophy and a barrel of beer. The losing team — the slowest of the 40 boats — receives half a liter of cod liver oil per person, which they must drink publicly in front of a cheering crowd. Furthermore, the previous year's losing team bears the main responsibility for organizing the next race. Thus, in 2026, the Alte Straßburger Burschenschaft Germania is hosting the spectacle — they had the worst result in 2025.
Costume Parade and Judging
Before the actual race, the costume parade takes place starting at 1 p.m.: each team presents its costume on the bank, and a jury judges creativity, humor, and spectacle. Themes range from political satire and pop culture references to completely absurd costumes — the Königsberg team appeared in 2024 as a complete Frankenstein episode, other boats come as a sushi table, a Roman galley, or a dangerous Viking troop. The costume award is given in addition to the race prize.
