Beach Handball at the Highest Level
Beach handball is the sand variant of classic indoor handball and has been played in Germany in an organized manner since the 1990s. The Travemünder Beachhandball-Cup has developed into one of the largest tournaments on the national scene in recent years. The venue is the Strandterrassen (beach terraces) of Travemünde, a district of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck and one of the most famous seaside resorts on the German Baltic Sea coast.
Four Competition Tracks
The tournament is divided into four tracks:
- Seniors — the main sporting competition, with high-class matches on Saturday and Sunday starting at 8:30 AM, complemented by a lively beach party on Saturday evening.
- Juniors — around 50 youth teams, Friday afternoon from 4:00 PM — the tournament's opening weekend.
- School Cup — free participation for all schools, registration via the online portal — Friday morning, one of Germany's largest school beach handball tournaments.
- Referees — workshops and practical sessions for experienced whistlers and beginners, with support from the organizing team.
Nestled in the Baltic Seaside Resort of Travemünde
Travemünde, with its four-kilometer-long sandy beach, its promenade, and its distinctive Maritim high-rise building, is one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Lübeck Bay. It administratively belongs to Lübeck (Hanseatic city, district-free city in the state of Schleswig-Holstein). During the Cup weekend, the beach zone at the Strandterrassen becomes a sports ground with several beach handball courts and a stage for the supporting program.
Around It: Sports and Party
In addition to the competitions, there is a supporting program on the beach with live music, a beach DJ, and food trucks. Camping arrangements are offered. Sponsors such as sports brands and local companies support the tournament — the slogan "Without you, our tournament would be unthinkable" is also true for the volunteers, according to the organizers.
