Season opening festival on the Baltic Sea beach with live music, street food, and beach atmosphere
Travemünde, the most famous district of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck directly on the Baltic Sea, has been one of Germany's oldest and most elegant seaside resorts since the 1820s. With its beach chairs, promenade, the Travemünde Casino, the famous four-masted sailing training ship Passat, and the bustling Travemünde harbor, it is a year-round destination for day-trippers from Hamburg, Lübeck, and Kiel. In May, the seaside resort opens its summer season – and for several years now, this has been celebrated with the SEEBADKULTUR.FESTIVAL.
The festival's venues are the Strandbühne an der Nordermole (beach stage at the Nordermole) and the Strandterrassen (beach terraces) – both idyllic open-air locations directly on the Baltic Sea beach with a view of the water. For five days, bands from Northern Germany (and occasionally from further afield) perform their programs: rock covers, soul, funk, Latin rock, and Modern Country alternate. The concerts take place during the day, offering a classic May beach program with a cozy season-opening atmosphere.
In parallel with the stage program, street food trucks are located along the beach promenade and on the beach terraces. The offerings range from the classic fish roll (a must on the Baltic Sea) to burgers, crêpes, ice cream, and cocktails. Admission to the festival is free, and the program is financed by Lübeck und Travemünde Marketing GmbH and sponsors.
The organizers emphasize sustainable festival management: wind power for stages and stands, mandatory reusable cups and containers (via RECUP and REBOWL), minimal resource consumption, and consistent waste management. This positions the festival as an ecologically responsible season-opening event.
Travemünde is administratively part of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck and is reachable by train from Lübeck Hauptbahnhof in 20 minutes. Visitors to the festival often combine it with a stroll through Lübeck's Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage site), a visit to the Buddenbrookhaus, or a boat trip across the bascule bridge and along the Trave promenade. The festival simultaneously opens the season of one of Germany's most beautiful Baltic Sea bathing resorts.
From May 13 to 17, 2026, the SEEBADKULTUR.FESTIVAL opens the Travemünde season. Daytime programs on the Nordermole beach stage, street food trucks on the beach promenade. Free admission, reusable deposit system.
