World's largest privately organized VW Beetle meeting on the Baltic Sea
Every summer weekend, the Brügmanngarten in Lübeck-Travemünde transforms into a parking lot of a special kind: hundreds of VW Beetles and Buses, some meticulously restored, others roadworthy, all with a story. The Beetle Sunshinetour has long been a must-attend event for the North German Beetle scene, attracting fans from all over Germany, Scandinavia, and the Netherlands to the Lübeck Bay.
The 2026 edition is under the motto "Flower Power & Beetle Love". Organizers are calling on participants to decorate their vehicles with floral arrangements and LED light chains — in the evening, this creates a collective sea of lights along the promenade. Sunglasses and flower garlands are the connecting elements, visually turning the meeting into a hippie weekend in the north.
Even though the technical standard of the exhibited vehicles is high, the tour remains a family-friendly meeting point. What takes place in Travemünde is considered a class reunion of the international Beetle scene among connoisseurs. In the state of Schleswig-Holstein, the event has developed into a firm tourist attraction over the years, benefiting Travemünde, Lübeck, and the entire Baltic coast.
The meeting is supported by Volkswagen, the Lübeck Travemünde Marketing tourism agency, and Autostadt Wolfsburg, among others. VIP tickets for the accompanying 24-hour race were already auctioned in December 2025 — places are coveted and are allocated quickly.
Travemünde has belonged to the Hanseatic City of Lübeck since 1329 and is its district with direct access to the Baltic Sea. The beach promenade, lighthouse, and the four-masted barque Passat shape the scenery. During the Beetle Sunshinetour, this postcard backdrop transforms into a colorful VW festival.
The 2026 edition of the Beetle Sunshinetour is brought forward by one day compared to previous years, starting on Friday, August 21st. This gives participants three full days in Travemünde to present vehicles, cruise together, and create the LED sea of lights in the evening.
The focus is on the motto "Flower Power & Beetle Love": organizers are calling for thematic decoration of vehicles and participants — flower garlands, sunglasses, hippie look. The meeting is accompanied by the traditional 24-hour race (VIP tickets already auctioned in December 2025) as well as family activities and an online shop for merchandise.
The detailed daily program will be published in the weeks leading up to the event on beetle-sunshinetour.de.
