Kerwa in the Water Wheel Village
The Kirchweih Möhrendorf is the annual Kerwa festival of the municipality of Möhrendorf in the Erlangen-Höchstadt district of Middle Franconia. Möhrendorf is known far beyond the region for its historic water wheels on the Regnitz river – large wooden wheels that lift river water for irrigating the meadows and are in operation from May to September. They are considered a technical cultural monument and shape the village's identity.
Franconian Customs
As everywhere in Franconia, the 'Kärwa' is the most important village festival of the year. It is supported by the Kirchweih associations and the Kärwaburschen (young men responsible for the Kerwa traditions). The raising of the Kirchweih tree, brass music and party bands in the festival tent, a Kirchweih church service, and convivial gatherings in the festival tent and beer garden are all part of the established proceedings.
A Date in the September Calendar
The Möhrendorf Kirchweih takes place in September and is firmly anchored in the Franconian Kirchweih calendar of the Erlangen-Höchstadt district. It attracts visitors from Möhrendorf and the surrounding communities, offering an opportunity to experience the village with its water wheels and festival culture.
Tradition and Identity
The combination of living Franconian Kirchweih customs and the unique technical attraction of the water wheels makes Möhrendorf particularly appealing. Visitors to the Kerwa can easily combine their visit with a walk along the Regnitz river to see the water wheels.
