Franconian Kirchweih under the centuries-old dancing linden tree
In Upper Franconia, the word Tanzlinde (dancing linden tree) almost inevitably brings Effeltrich to mind. The centuries-old linden tree opposite the fortified Church of St. George is one of the most famous in all of Germany—dendrologists estimate its age at 600 to 800 years, with some sources even mentioning 1000 years. Since 2021, it has been part of Germany's natural heritage as National Heritage Tree No. 39. It is precisely here, under the mighty canopy of leaves, that the village celebrates its Kirchweih.
The Effeltrich Kerwa extends from Friday to Monday and follows a fixed schedule: On Friday, the "Burschenverein Zufriedenheit Effeltrich" opens the festival. On Saturday, the Baumaufstellen (tree erection) takes place—the decorated Kerwabaum is erected in the village center, an act of physical exertion and symbolic significance. Sunday is dedicated to the church service and culinary delights. The highlight follows on Monday.
On Kerwamontag (festival Monday), 16 Effeltrich couples in their magnificent Franconian traditional costumes perform the Betzenaustanzen (dancing for the cake/sausage) around the Kerwabaum. During the round dance, a wreath, a sausage, or a piece of cake—the "Betzen"—is symbolically danced for: the couple that has the Betzen at the right moment of the music wins. The custom dates back to the Middle Ages and has been preserved in this form in only a few places in Upper Franconia.
Effeltrich is located in the Forchheim district, one of the most traditional regions of Franconian Switzerland and the culinary region of Upper Franconia. In addition to the Tanzlinde, the fortified Church of St. George, the Fosalecken custom during Carnival, and the traditional costume community are essential components of the village's identity. The Kerwa is not just a folk festival but living cultural heritage.
In 2026, Effeltrich will once again uphold its Kirchweih, passed down through generations. The "Burschenverein Zufriedenheit" (Youth Club Contentment) is organizing the event, ensuring that the central customs—the tree erection on Saturday and the Betzenaustanzen on Monday—shape the festival's rhythm.
Around the Tanzlinde, festival rides, stalls, and market stands will be set up, and the local inns will offer Franconian specialties: Schäuferla (pork shoulder), Bratwürste (sausages), Krautwickerla (cabbage rolls), and a hearty toast to the regional brewing tradition.
